Chevetogne: Monastic Culture, Garden Paths and Family Experiences

Chevetogne combines spiritual culture with gardens, nature trails and unusual family experiences. The monastery, the Domaine de Chevetogne and its various offerings open up very different possibilities for your trip: you can learn about liturgical traditions, choose short paths through designed landscapes or spend a day with children among playgrounds, animals and distinctive structures.

Monastic Culture with Two Liturgical Traditions

The monastery of Chevetogne was founded at the end of 1925 by Dom Lambert Beauduin (1873–1960). In general, the daily liturgical services are celebrated simultaneously in the Latin and Byzantine churches. All liturgical services are open to people who wish to join the community in prayer. Important for your planning: On weekdays, the monastery churches are open from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The architectural and artistic history also gives the visit its own distinctive character. The Latin church was built between 1981 and 1988. It is decorated with two frescoes inspired by Romanesque art, attributed to the Russian monk and iconographer Archimandrite Zénon. At the Musée d’Histoire(s) Naturelle(s), you can also discover exhibition rooms in the cellars and attics of the Château de Chevetogne.

Garden Paths and Marked Hiking Trails

If you would like to combine nature experiences with manageable distances, Chevetogne offers several clearly distinct paths. The Boucle des étangs is 4.4 kilometres long, has very little incline and features a surface without edges or uneven sections. The Sentier des jardins runs for 1.4 kilometres through the gardens of the Domaine de Chevetogne. The Sentier ornithologique is 3.25 kilometres long. Since 2021, the Domaine Provincial de Chevetogne has had a total of five marked hiking trails.

This information helps you take the desired length and character of an excursion into account when planning your day. The Sentier des jardins is suitable for a shorter loop; those planning a longer route can put the Boucle des étangs or the ornithological trail on their itinerary.

Special Destinations for Families

One of the striking discoveries is Le Cheval Bayard, a giant wooden horse in a clearing. The Domaine de Chevetogne also offers at least 14 outdoor playgrounds. Boat trips in Indian canoes are offered on the Bout du Monde pond; a trip lasts one hour. The Nature Extraordinary Museum is a nature interpretation centre in the Esplanade garden.

Other unusual stops include the Cabane du Hobbit in the hollow of the Hymalayan Glade between the Esplanade and the ponds, as well as the offerings at the Ferme des Petits. On the afternoons of LOISIR and FUN days, the Ferme des Petits opens its indoor play area for children aged 3 to 7. The outdoor areas are freely open to individual visitors, that is, visitors outside groups. The outdoor tour includes enclosures and aviaries adapted to children’s height.

As an additional activity, the Balade-jeu « sur les traces de Noisette » is a 2.5-kilometre-long adventure. This allows you to choose between a walk, a game, nature interpretation and longer stays outdoors depending on age and interests, without committing the entire day to a single activity.

The Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Chevetogne, it helps to first determine your preferred focus. For a culture-oriented stay, the monastery, churches and two museums take centre stage. Families, on the other hand, can structure their day around the playgrounds, the Ferme des Petits, the Balade-jeu or the canoe trip. Those who enjoy exploring on foot can take the different route lengths and trail characteristics into account when choosing their daily itinerary.

Therefore, compare not only accommodation but also the experiences you would like to plan from your base. For other places at the same hierarchical level, you can also include Braibant, Serinchamps and Achêne in your further orientation.
