Martouzin lies at the foot of the Calestienne, a limestone band several dozen kilometres long, associated with distinctive flora and characteristic landscapes. The starting point is about 100 metres above the large depression of the Famenne and overlooks it. This brings two distinct landscapes together: the limestone band and the Famenne plain. For travellers choosing a holiday destination based on scenery and outdoor experiences, Martouzin offers more than a single viewpoint.

Walking through woodland and open countryside

The “Martouzin 2 (yellow rectangle)” circular walking trail passes through the Bois d'Uchy and offers open views over the Famenne plain and the fields of Pondrôme. Woodland and open countryside are part of the same circular route. If you enjoy experiencing landscapes along a route, you may value this combination differently from the view at the starting point: the circular trail is shaped by woodland, fields and the plain, while the elevated position above the Famenne takes centre stage at the starting point.

The cycle route offers a different way to get around. Since 2018, it has connected Beauraing and Focant and passes through Martouzin-Neuville. Unlike the circular walking trail, described in terms of the Bois d'Uchy and its views, the cycle route focuses on connecting two places. This offers two different ways to plan: a walking route with named landscape highlights, or a cycling link that includes Martouzin-Neuville as part of the journey between Beauraing and Focant. Which one better suits your stay depends on whether woodland and panoramic views or the connection between places appeal more.

Discover limestone and travertine

The Géobalade de Beauraing includes the viewpoint at Martouzin and the Neuville Travertine geosite. It passes through a landscape whose geology consists mainly of Givetian limestone from the Calestienne. The Travertine geosite was once a small quarry; there, calcareous springs actively deposit fragile travertine. Two timeframes meet here: the quarry is a former one, while the springs continue depositing the fragile rock. The Géobalade thus links the limestone geology of the Calestienne with a specific deposition process.

Other local highlights and choosing accommodation

Martouzin-Neuville has a launch site for paragliding and hang gliding. These two air sports add another way to experience the landscape alongside walking and cycling. If you would like to include the launch site in your plans, check current access and use options beforehand. Martouzin also has a public outdoor playground, a specific place to play and an additional point of interest for a stay with children.

Les Raviers de Louise is also part of the local character: a horticultural business in the village that aims to offer organic produce for direct sale. This project adds an agricultural dimension alongside the landscape and activity themes.

When looking for a holiday rental in Martouzin, the kind of stay you want may influence your choice: do you want the Famenne and Calestienne landscapes to shape your trip, or are trails, cycling and geology the main draw? This question connects your choice of location with the experiences described and helps you match the character of the destination to your holiday plans.
