Blegny-Mine is one of the best-preserved sites of Belgian coal mining. The mining activity represented by the site spans from the early 19th century to the second half of the 20th century. On 1 July 2012, Blegny-Mine was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Several aspects of the subject come together here: historic buildings, technical facilities, traces in the landscape and insights into underground mining. The clear focus makes it easy to understand Blegny as a travel destination: the emphasis is on the history of coal mining at this specific site.

Underground and on the tourist train

During a visit to Blegny-Mine, two mine galleries lead 30 and 60 metres below ground level. The gallery at a depth of 60 metres is therefore twice as deep as the one at 30 metres. On the guided tour, visitors follow the coal’s journey through the sorting and washing plant. A jacket and helmet are provided for the underground visit. If you plan to visit this part of the site, check the current tour times in advance.

The tourist train, which departs from Blegny-Mine, offers a different perspective. It provides an exceptional view of the former mine and the surrounding landscape. While the gallery tour leads underground, the train offers views of the site and its surroundings. Commentary is available in French, Dutch, English and German. This lets you choose between two different ways of seeing the site. Also check the current departure times before making your plans.

Museum and technical traces

The mining museum is housed in Puits-Marie, one of Belgium’s oldest mining buildings, dating from 1849. The permanent exhibition is presented in four languages. The historic setting and exhibition provide a distinct focus alongside the underground tour: here, the emphasis is on presenting mining history in a museum.

The complex also includes a headframe and technical buildings. Two spoil heaps, 37 and 55 metres high, complete the picture of the former mine. They differ in height by 18 metres, and one of the heaps still has its tipping structure. These differences make the above-ground traces a distinct part of Blegny-Mine’s industrial history, not merely an addition to the galleries and museum.

A former ventilation shaft from the 19th century has also been converted into an adventure trail. It brings together two time periods: the shaft recalls its former function, while its conversion represents a later use. Along with the technical buildings and spoil heaps, it broadens the view of the mine beyond the underground tours.

Choosing Blegny as a travel destination

If you are looking for a holiday rental in Blegny, the history of coal mining may be what tips the balance in favour of this destination. Consider which part interests you most: the galleries, the museum, the tourist train or the interplay of historic traces across the site. These highlights offer different ways to explore the same subject, without limiting your visit to just one perspective. This lets you plan your trip around your interest in industrial heritage.
