Hertsberge combines a forest-dominated setting with distinctive architecture, historical traditions and a protected stream landscape. Churches, Chapels and Historical Traces

The Sint-Janskerk was built in 1891. It is a Neo-Gothic-inspired basilica church with a strong architectural unity, making it an important point of reference for a culturally oriented travel itinerary. On the west side are two stained-glass windows that come from the chapel of the former Bulskampveld Castle and were installed here in 1931. Those interested in architectural history can therefore consider both the year of construction and the origin of these windows when exploring the church.

Kasteel Hertsberge, also known as Kasteel Rapaert de Grass, is likewise part of the village’s historical character. Its origins date back to the early Middle Ages. The castle stands amid an atmospheric landscape park connected to the Ringbeek valley behind it. A smaller and different type of architectural landmark is the Kortekeerskapel: this brick wayside chapel, built in 1899, is dedicated to Our Lady. As a pillar chapel, it consists of reddish-brown brick and stands beneath a small gabled roof covered with black Boom tiles. A wrought-iron cross sits on the ridge, while a lime tree shades the chapel.

The deeper history of Hertsberge also includes the Benedictine Abbey of Sint-Calixtus van Cysoing. It presumably established a provostry around 1149. According to one legend, the foundation had already taken place around 800. These different dates belong to different traditions and should therefore be considered separately.

Protected Stream Landscape and Routes

The bed and banks of the Hertsbergebeek are protected as a landscape. Particularly noteworthy is the freely meandering course of the stream: this geomorphological phenomenon is rare in Flanders and almost unique in West Flanders. A wooded setting remains characteristic of Hertsberge to this day. Together with the landscape park at Kasteel Hertsberge, this creates a nature theme that clearly differs from a purely urban cultural trip.

For an active leg of your trip, the Proosdijstraat cycling and walking connection is available. The partly paved cycling and walking path is 800 metres long and runs between Kampveld and Proosdijstraat.

Today’s Hertsbergveld also bears traces of the historical landscape. The former provostry of Hertsberge owned several ponds there. Its former use should be distinguished from the present-day landscape. For mobility planning, another temporally specific detail is also relevant: in December 2025, five electric Hoppy rental bicycles were available at Kerk Hertsberge.

Seasonal Produce and the Right Accommodation

Two of these markets are farmers’ markets where only its own produce is sold.
