Church, Mill and Traces of the Past

The present-day parish church of Sint-Sebastiaan was built between 1792 and 1794. The west tower of the previous church was retained. This Late Gothic tower is considered the oldest part of the present church building and is generally dated to the beginning of the 16th century. Another historic chapel was added in 1948: the Sint-Sebastiaanskapel was built to replace an older wayside chapel dedicated to Saint Sebastian.

The Boembekemolen also reaches far back into Michelbeke’s history. Its oldest known mention dates from 1548, although the mill is probably older. Today, the Boembekemolen is a Natuurpunt visitor centre on the border between Rozebeke and Michelbeke. The former station building, by contrast, is a reminder of the former Aalst–Zottegem–Ronse railway line. It was probably built at the beginning of the 20th century and preserves three of the four original façade stones bearing the raised inscription “Michelbeke”, as well as the iron trusses of the former platform canopy.

Zwalm Valley and the Miners’ Path

The Zwalm Valley area between Nederbrakel and Nederzwalm also includes Michelbeke’s historic village centre. For active days, the Miners’ Path is an excellent option: in the area between Rozebeke and Michelbeke, you can hike, cycle, ride a scooter or skate. The route follows a former railway line between Zottegem and Blaton in Hainaut, which has been converted into a walking and cycling path.

Because of their diverse abiotic features, the embankments of the Miners’ Path provide a suitable habitat for many rare plants. This allows you to combine physical activity with views of the area’s distinctive nature, without every trip having to follow the same rhythm. Berendries Hill is located on the road between Michelbeke and Sint-Maria-Oudenhove. At the municipal boundary with Elst, you will also find the Wegkapelletje met twee lindes, a wayside chapel probably dating from the 18th century, situated between two lime trees.

Geutelingen and the Tradition Surrounding Appollonia

Michelbeke maintains a centuries-old tradition in honour of Appollonia, the patron saint of dental health. Every year around Candlemas, from the end of January to the end of February, wood-fired ovens are heated in Michelbeke and Elst to bake Geutelingen. This special period gives a trip a clear seasonal focus and complements the historic and scenic impressions with a regional speciality.
