Nature Trails along the Dijle and Antitankgracht

The Antitankgracht is a prominent landscape and historical feature. It was built in 1939 as part of the KW Line, the main Koningshooikt-Wavre line of resistance, with an extension to Namur. Today, the Antitankgrachtwandeling route passes through the Antitankgracht and the adjacent Haachts Broek. Bridges and corduroy paths give the route its own character. The Haachts Broek-Antitankgracht area has been recognized as a nature reserve since 2001.

The Dijlevalleiwandeling offers a different perspective. It follows the Dijle and passes the Hooiberg nature reserve. This allows two contrasting landscape experiences to be included in your travel plans: the river's water-shaped surroundings and the special connection between nature and military history at the Antitankgracht. For families with different interests, such routes can provide a good basis for combining active sections with quieter discoveries without limiting the day's programme to just one attraction.

Wespelaar Arboretum also has its own special focus. Covering an area of 20 hectares, it contains around 2,300 species and varieties. Anyone who appreciates plants and designed landscapes can plan this visit as an independent nature experience alongside the walks.

Historical Discoveries in Haacht and Tildonk

History is reflected not only in individual buildings. The protected status of the Sint-Jan-de-Doperkerk also includes the walled cemetery. In Tildonk, the 3.8 km Monumentenwandeling Tildonk begins at the Sint-Jan-de-Doperkerk Tildonk. The centre of Tildonk was recognized for its historical value in 2002. Anyone interested in church architecture will encounter a predominantly Gothic rural church there, with a 14th-century west tower and a 16th-century nave.

Further stops provide a deeper insight: Hansbrug is an exceptionally old and increasingly rare example of a riveted iron swing bridge dating from 1890 to 1895. The Dubbele schutsluis in Tildonk is a well-preserved example of a unique 18th-century lock with two bulb-shaped lock chambers. It formed part of the facilities of the Leuven-Mechelen Canal, which entered service in 1763; an original, fairly well-preserved lock keeper's house in the Classical style stands in the immediate vicinity.

The historical selection also includes Kasteeltje van Tildonk, with a core consisting of a blockhouse from the beginning of the 15th century, and Heerlyckheid van Roost. The former castle grounds are now laid out as a neighbourhood park; natural stone walls make the outlines of the castle visible again. The “Langs de zes Haachtse kerken” cycling route explores more than 600 years of religious and civic architectural history.

Getting Around and Choosing the Right Starting Point

Haacht can be reached by public transport. At Haacht or Wespelaar-Tildonk railway stations, you can change to a bus or take a Blue-bike. This information is particularly useful if you want to choose your accommodation not only based on the view, but also on your preferred way of getting around. A stay with many historical stops calls for a different daily rhythm than a trip focused on walks and nature areas.

Culinary discoveries can also be added: Hoevebrouwerij Hof ten Dormaal has been brewing beers with 100% its own ingredients since 2009. Alongside paths, bridges, churches and locks, this provides another way to experience the local character.
