Chaumont-Gistoux: Culture, Landscapes and Trails

Chaumont-Gistoux combines impressive cultural heritage with landscapes that can be explored on foot or by bicycle. In the centre of Chaumont, the Church of Saint Bavo stands on a promontory at the site of a former castle. Its neo-Gothic structure was built in 1912–1913, while also preserving a Gothic tower and a Gothic choir from the 13th century. Inside are a 16th-century Christ, confessionals and Gothic baptismal fonts from the 15th century. The church thus offers several historical layers that can be combined during a culturally focused stay.

Another noteworthy church is Notre-Dame de l’Assomption in Longueville. Its organ and Baroque case are considered to be of exceptional quality. The organ was restored in 1996 after having been preserved in a condition very close to its original state. In Longueville, the Musée d’Horlogerie also presents the development of clockmaking techniques in Europe over the past four centuries. Father and son Pater make original clocks there and restore old pendulum clocks and wristwatches in their workshop. Advance reservations are required to visit the Musée d’Horlogerie.

The Ferme à Longueville is also one of the area’s historic features. Its dovecote forms a gatehouse with a portal dating from 1786. Those interested in older forms of land use and architectural heritage will therefore find various points of interest in Chaumont-Gistoux rather than just a single sightseeing destination.

Michelsberg and Étang d’Inchebroux

The Michelsberg archaeological site makes the area’s long history particularly vivid. The artificially created, bow-shaped earthwork is 700 m long and 12 m wide, is accompanied by a surrounding ditch and encloses an area of approximately 30 ha. The Michelsberg monument is associated with the Michelsberg period, dating from approximately 4250–3650 BC. Excavated flints and pottery provide evidence of human settlement since the Mesolithic, approximately 6000–4250 BC. The site has been classified since 1971 under the name “Parc des Bruyères”.

Another landscape highlight is Étang d’Inchebroux. The pond and the surrounding areas have been classified since 1976; with its pollarded willows, the Étang is considered to be of landscape importance. At the same time, the former water reservoirs point to the area’s economic history: they were used successively by a mill, a paper mill and a flax factory. The Moulin blanc, also known as “Debienne”, was formerly used alternately as an oil mill and a grain mill.

Walking Trails, Cycling Routes and Rose Garden

The “Sur les traces du passé” walking trail is 4.8 km long and starts at the car park of the Centre sportif André Docquier in Chaumont-Gistoux. The Syndicat d’Initiative has also created two signposted circular cycling routes. The road cycling route “Chaumont-Gistoux, au fil de ses villages, par monts et par vaux, à vélo” is 50 km long and moderately difficult.

A more peaceful addition is the Roseraie communale de Chaumont-Gistoux. Guided tours are organised there in June and for groups on request. The Syndicat d’Initiative bears the “Bienvenue vélo” label and promotes discovering the quiet landscape of Chaumont-Gistoux on foot or by bicycle. This makes it possible to plan a varied stay for families with different interests: one day can be devoted to cultural visits, another to the walking trail or a cycling tour.
