Dinant: Citadel, Sax Heritage and Rocky Landscapes

La Merveilleuse cave was discovered in 1904 and opened to tourism on 11 June 1904. Its galleries extend over three levels, from 155 to 100 metres in elevation. Rocher Bayard provides another striking landmark: the approximately 40-metre-high limestone rock above the Meuse has a 3.50-metre-wide passage and is associated with the legend of the four sons of Aymon, passed down since the Middle Ages.

In the surrounding area, Château de Walzin stands above a rocky promontory on a bend in the Lesse. It was built from the 13th century onwards and still has a horseshoe-shaped corner tower from the 15th century with four loopholes. The château thus adds another historic site to Dinant’s cultural and landscape experiences.

Meuse, Lesse and Different Travel Paces

A 45-minute cruise from Dinant to Anseremme offers panoramic views of the colourful houses along the Meuse, the Collégiale Notre-Dame and the citadel. The two-hour cruise from Dinant to Freÿr, by contrast, passes through a more natural landscape, where limestone cliffs rise above the water. Those who prefer to be active themselves will find particularly rich, green nature in a Natura 2000 area as well as impressive rocky escarpments on a kayaking trip along the Lesse.
