For active days, the Bels Lijntje is an ideal standalone cycling experience. The 30 km cycle path follows a former railway line between Turnhout and Tilburg. 22 km lie in the Netherlands and 8 km in Belgium. Along the route, you cross the Belgian-Dutch border approximately nine times. Baarle lies roughly halfway along the Bels Lijntje and can therefore be considered a possible place to stay along this route when planning your trip.

If you prefer to travel on foot, you can plan a walk along the 5 km Hannebroekpad. The walking route runs almost entirely along unpaved paths, creating a different focus from the enclave walk through the village centre. The two routes represent different ideas for a day out: one is a more rural route, while the other focuses on the town’s distinctive geography and the border crossings in the centre.

The Merkske: Landscape Between Two Countries

Another facet of Baarle-Hertog can be seen in the Merkske landscape area. The Merkske is a naturally winding stream and forms the natural border between the Netherlands and Belgium as well as between the Noorderkempen and Noord-Brabant. Alpine newts, smooth newts and great crested newts are found in the Merkske Valley. In total, the Merkske landscape area contains more than 1,900 hectares of special nature and landscape.

The N8 enclave also shows how closely political borders and landscapes are connected. It is partly a Dutch nature reserve and is completely surrounded by agricultural land designated as Belgian.
