Around Vyaliki Trastsyanets, the Trostenets Memorial Complex connects the obelisk in Bolshoy Trostenets with the former camp site in Maly Trostenets, the cremation site in Shashkovka, and the site of the mass shootings in Blahovshchyna. Culture and History
The virtual tour of Trostenets explains the crimes committed during the German occupation and the site's development into a memorial from the end of the Second World War to the present day. The Historical Workshop offers themed tours and events on the history of the Minsk ghetto, the Trostenets extermination camp, and other sites of Nazi crimes in Belarus.
In the vicinity of Vyaliki Trastsyanets, the first construction phase of the Maly Trostenets Memorial Complex opened in summer 2015 as a memorial to the victims. The central monument of the Trostenets Memorial Complex is the ten-metre-high bronze composition “Gates of Memory”.
Memorial Sites
A memorial obelisk for the victims of the Trostenets extermination camp stands in Bolshoy Trostenets. The obelisk commemorating the prisoners murdered in the Trostenets extermination camp was erected there in 1963 as part of the Trostenets Memorial Complex. The memorial complex also includes a memorial square in Bolshoy Trostenets. The obelisk was erected with an eternal flame in memory of the victims of Nazism.
The school museum in Bolshoy Trostenets opened on the 30th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus. Over a period of more than 20 years, students and teachers at the school museum conducted research, met eyewitnesses and former prisoners, contacted relatives of the victims, and worked with the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War.
Paths and Grounds
In the vicinity of Vyaliki Trastsyanets, the Trostenets Memorial Complex's excursion route begins along the “Road of Death”, the path along which prisoners were led.
In the same area, Leonid Levin's “Path of Death” invites visitors to retrace the victims' final journey across concrete suitcases, stylised railway carriages, and a section of forest to the mass graves or shooting pits. The forest of Blahovshchyna contains shooting and mass graves, as well as the “Path of Death” and the “Forest of Remembrance”.
Historical Context
Historically, commemorative ceremonies for Maly Trostenets took place mainly in Bolshoy Trostenets, several kilometres from the former camp site. The planned memorial “The Massif of Names” was intended to commemorate almost 10,000 Austrian Jewish men and women who were deported from Vienna towards Minsk between May and October 1942 and murdered in Maly Trostenets.
