Somry: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Somry was completely burned down by German troops in November 1942 during the occupation.

History

In Somry there is a grave for victims of fascism, where 180 villagers are buried who were killed by German occupiers in October 1942. An obelisk was erected at the grave of the war victims in 1984. In 1942, Somry was an area of partisan activity.

Traditions

The Snake Stone is located near Somry in Krupki District. According to a local legend, Christians wanted to build a chapel in Somry next to the erratic boulder at a crossroads. The stone then acquired a depression and became a place of worship.

Near Somry, a cemetery with stone tombs from the 17th century has been preserved. The local population calls it the Latin Cemetery or Uniate Cemetery.

The erratic boulder “Божье кресло” was taken to Krupki and placed next to the Krupki District Museum of Local Lore.

According to local tradition, on the Snake Stone, the Snake King transformed into a handsome young musician on the Feast of the Annunciation and the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Another local tradition advises against going into the forest near the Snake Stone on the Feast of the Annunciation and the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

The wider regional surroundings of Somry are described as a present-day transitional area between lakes, marshes, and forests, where numerous such sacred landscape monuments are concentrated.
