Discover Altenberg near Linz
Altenberg near Linz is located on a southern foothill of the Mühlviertel Highlands and combines impressive views from the heights with hiking trails, church art and a long history. From its elevated location at 593 metres, panoramic views extend across the Mühlviertel and over the provincial capital Linz to the Upper Austrian Central Region and as far as the foothills of the Northern Limestone Alps. This gives the town a diverse setting for a trip where experiences in nature and cultural discoveries go hand in hand.
Hiking between highlands and valleys
A circular hiking trail leads through Altenberg, passing the Kulmerberg, Wetterberg and Geiselsberg. If you would like to include a longer connection in your travel plans, you can consider the direct hiking trail from Linz to Altenberg, which partly follows the former horse-drawn railway. Another trail leads through the unspoilt, romantic Mirellental valley to Gallneukirchen. The different routes allow you to plan your days according to the landscapes you would like to see and your preferred excursion destination, without limiting Altenberg to a single route.
A special option for a more leisurely walk is the Weitrager Way of the Cross. It is an easy circular trail with 11 benches. The signs for the Resurrection Chapel and the Weitrager Way of the Cross are located opposite the parish church. A hiking map for the routes in Altenberg is available from the Altenberg bei Linz municipal office and can also be downloaded.
Architecture, religious buildings and local history
One of the notable historic buildings is the former municipal office in Altenberg near Linz. It was built between 1927 and 1930 according to plans by the architect Mauriz Balzarek and combines elements of the Heimatstil, Art Nouveau and Expressionism. Altenberg Parish Church is a Late Gothic building. Its approximately 42-metre-high tower leans westwards, away from the church. Its furnishings include a Baroque high altar from the former Sautern subsidiary church of Schlierbach Abbey.
The Resurrection Chapel is another defining religious site. It was renovated in 2012 and 2013. Altenberg was first mentioned in a Passau document in 1245 and was already a destination for many pilgrims in the 17th century. A traditional pilgrimage still bears witness to this religious heritage today: Every year, on the Sunday after Saints Peter and Paul, the residents of Ottenschlag make a pilgrimage to the Madonna of Grace in Altenberg. The cultural scene is complemented by an amateur theatre group that has existed for more than 30 years; the current ensemble comprises around 60 performers. Neolithic finds also show that nomadic groups of hunters and gatherers stayed in the Altenberg area at least temporarily.
Active days and seasonal activities

In winter conditions, cross-country skiing is possible in Altenberg. The roundabout and Oberbairing near the Wirt z'Bairing inn are listed as starting points for the cross-country ski trail. For your specific planning, it is important to note that the cross-country ski trail is currently not in operation.
The right accommodation for your travel plans
When choosing a holiday apartment in Altenberg near Linz, you can make your preferred daily rhythm the starting point for your plans. For extended hikes, the circular trail, the route through the Mirellental valley and the connection from Linz to Altenberg offer different landscape experiences. Those interested in culture will find several distinct themes in the Late Gothic parish church, the former municipal office, the Resurrection Chapel and the pilgrimage traditions. For a trip with several people, the tours offered for groups of up to 25 people can be a separate item on your itinerary.
This allows you to tailor your accommodation search to your personal interests: physical activity in the countryside, architecture and history, or a combination of both. The seasonal cross-country skiing information should be considered separately from the hiking and cultural topics described above.
For your further search, you can also view the following places: Lichtenberg, Feldkirchen an der Donau, Vorderweißenbach, Weignersdorf, Alberndorf in der Riedmark, Herzogsdorf, Goldwörth and Schenkenfelden.
