Route details may change; check them before setting out.

Running and woodland near Weignersdorf

The short woodland path near Weignersdorf lies at the eastern end of the Breitlüsserwald forest. Together with the Running Loop, it offers two different points of reference for planning your day: a running route with a stated length and approximate duration, and a short path at the edge of the forest, for which no walking time is given. This lets you distinguish the routes in Weignersdorf from other things to do in Hellmonsödt when planning your activities.

This distinction can be useful when looking for a holiday apartment: according to the information available, the running route starts in Weignersdorf, while the themed and cultural routes described here are in Hellmonsödt. Consider which of these highlights you would like to include in your travel plans, rather than treating every experience as part of a single circular route itinerary.

Routes and discoveries in Hellmonsödt

The Hans Helmon Storybook Trail is about 2.5 kilometres long, suitable for strollers and takes around 40 minutes. Nine display panels tell the story of the poor farmer Hans Helmon; each panel has a riddle and an activity. The trail leads through the grounds of the leisure park in Hellmonsödt. It combines a manageable distance with story-based stops that invite visitors to take part along the way.

The four-kilometre Hellmonsödt Planet Trail explores a different theme. This barrier-free circular trail was created in 2006. Display panels provide information about the planets and the solar system; there are also children's play equipment and a picnic area. Hiking maps for finding your way around Hellmonsödt's network of trails are available at the municipal office. The Storybook Trail and Planet Trail therefore differ not only in length, but also in whether the story of a character or the solar system shapes the route.

Winter routes and cross-country skiing

The Oberaigen/Hellmonsödt Nordic Arena includes an easy, flat two-kilometre stadium loop and a 7.7-kilometre cross-country ski trail with varying levels of difficulty. Availability depends on seasonal snow conditions. When choosing a winter outing, it is therefore important to consider not only the route length, but also the desired level of difficulty and snow conditions.

A winter hiking loop follows the Planet Trail for the most part and also passes through Wasserwald Leisure Park. It is cleared for hikers and walkers in winter; winter maintenance depends on local conditions. Cross-country skiing and winter hiking are therefore different options: the ski trail is defined by its length and difficulty, while the loop follows the Planet Trail and passes through the leisure park.

Cultural history in Hellmonsödt and Pelmberg

One event in Weignersdorf's local history is precisely dated: on 20 April 1663, Regina Hueber, widow of Weignersdorf, sold her dwelling there, together with its appurtenances, to Jakob Thanninger. The Mittermayrhof at the Pelmberg Open-Air Museum offers another historical perspective. It was first mentioned in a document in 1325 and was built using the stone masonry typical of the Mühlviertel region.

The farmstead at Pelmberg also features a thatched roof weighing around 35,000 kilograms and an 18-metre-long escape tunnel. Carved into granite, the tunnel is still accessible. The open-air museum's visiting season runs from 1 May to 31 October. Visits are scheduled for Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 2 pm to 5 pm; visits by appointment are also possible. Check the opening times before your visit.

The Starhemberg Chapel in Hellmonsödt also offers historical points of interest: its crypt contains a small mummy around 400 years old, which can be viewed through a glass cover. The chapel and the exterior walls of the parish church feature a total of twelve marble grave slabs dating from 1418 to 1675.

The Starhemberg Chapel crypt is scheduled to be open for visits daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, except during church services. Guided tours of the crypt chapel and crypt last about 50 minutes and must be booked in advance. Confirm the times and appointment before your visit. This lets you fit the set visiting times into your travel plans while leaving enough time for your other routes and destinations.
