Churches, chapels and regional history

The parish church of Aigen is a neo-Gothic, historicist building that dominates the market square. The materials used are particularly noteworthy: the church uses grey Mühlviertel granite and red bricks from Prussian Silesia. Anyone interested in architecture and regional details can consciously include this centre of the town in their plans.

The Calvary Chapel lies north of the town, on the slope of the Bohemian Forest. The Baroque rotunda has open pillar arcades and a crucifixion group by Johann Worath dating from around 1650. In the vicinity of Aigen im Mühlkreis, Schlägl Abbey also offers an exhibition on the 800-year history of the Premonstratensian Order. The Kultur.Gut.Oberes Mühlviertel – Lehner Collection provides insights into the living and working conditions of the people of the Bohemian Forest across approximately 900 m². Selected objects focus on agriculture and crafts.

Forest trails, moorland and wide-ranging views

The Aigen-Schlägl forest nature trail is ideal for exploring the landscape on foot. It includes a water wheel and a rest area on the edge of the forest with wide-ranging views over Aigen-Schlägl. The trail starts and ends either at the Aigen-Schlägl market square or at the Höhenstraße car park. These two starting options help you fit the excursion into your day plan.

The Mühltalblickweg offers a different perspective. It runs south of Aigen-Schlägl across the surrounding hills and provides a view northwards into the valley of the Große Mühl. Schlägl Abbey and the Bohemian Forest are visible in the background. The Bayrische Au raised bog lies nearby, with Austria’s only Spirken raised bog as well as a diverse range of plant and animal life.

The Bayrische Au nature experience trail leads through the Bohemian Forest into the Bayrische Au raised bog area. It ends at a platform overlooking the Moldau Reservoir in the Czech Republic; there are benches there for a break. Within the municipality of Aigen-Schlägl, the Schauschwemme on the Iglbach floating canal can only be reached on foot via a 2.5 km route or by bicycle along the floating canal cycle route. This allows shorter and more extensive days in nature to be planned in different ways.

Birdlife and practical visit planning

The Vogelwelt museum in the Kulturhaus was opened in 1993 in the local Kulturhaus, a former elementary school. Vogelwelt in the Aigen-Schlägl Kulturhaus presents around 650 exhibits on bird species and their habitats, including ponds, field-and-meadow landscapes, forests, as well as houses, farms and gardens. The exhibits are supplemented by individually accessible bird calls.

When planning a visit, you should take the opening hours into account: Vogelwelt in the Aigen-Schlägl Kulturhaus is open from 1 May to 30 September on Saturdays and Sundays from 3 to 5 p.m. Outside these times, visits are possible by telephone or electronic advance registration.

Travel and regional orientation

Within the municipality of Aigen-Schlägl, the 57.78 km-long, single-track Mühlkreis railway line ends at Aigen-Schlägl station. It begins at Linz Urfahr station and runs in a north-westerly direction from Ottensheim. The railway line therefore provides a clear regional connection for planning your journey.
