Discover Grünburg
Grünburg offers a varied mix of railway history, cultural heritage, riverside landscapes and active experiences. The Steyrtal Heritage Railway is a particularly special introduction: Austria’s oldest steam-powered narrow-gauge railway runs for 16.7 km from Steyr local railway station to Grünburg local railway station. Those who want to combine a trip filled with historical impressions and excursions into nature will find a variety of options here for planning their day. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can therefore first consider whether culture, cycling, hiking or shared family experiences should be the focus of your trip.
Railway history and historic sites
In Grünburg, visitors can see a small exhibition about the history of the Steyrtal Heritage Railway as well as the railway workshop. Subject to the available space on the train, the railway carries bicycles, pushchairs and wheelchairs free of charge. This is interesting for travellers who want to combine different interests without committing to just one mode of transport.
Schmiedleithen is another of the town’s notable historic attractions. It is the only hammer-lord ensemble in the entire Eisenwurzen region to have been preserved in such completeness. The parish church of Grünburg, dedicated to Saint George, provides another cultural highlight. It is of Romanesque origin; the presbytery was extended in 1457 and the nave in 1519 to create their present Gothic form. The church stands on a hill on the left bank of the Steyr in the cadastral municipality of Obergrünburg. The Chapel of the Cross contains a Baroque altar in front of a Crucifixion group attributed to an artist from the Schwanthaler family.
Cycling along the Steyr River
For active days, the R 8 family cycling trail is a good choice. It runs close to the Steyr River and offers swimming spots, picnic areas, adventure stations, viewpoints and canyons. With its largely level route, the Steyrtal Cycle Path R 8 is also well suited to families. This allows you to plan a cycling tour at your preferred pace and include various stops along the way.
One particularly impressive section leads from Grünburg to the Steyr Gorge and back. The recommended section offers impressive views of the Steyr Gorge Nature Reserve. A holiday apartment is particularly well suited to planning a trip in which active days alternate with self-determined breaks.
Hiking, water and nature in Leonstein
The Planwiesen area in Leonstein, in the municipality of Grünburg, is a nature reserve. The L2 Hambaum Trail also starts in Leonstein, at a car park just below Hambaum next to the road. The route to the Rinnerberg Waterfall and gorge follows a marked hiking trail and a footbridge to the waterfall; an iron staircase then leads onwards into the Rinnerberg Gorge. In summer, the clear stream there is inviting for paddling and cooling off.
For a hike with a historical focus, the circular trail “In the Footsteps of the Black Counts” is ideal. It starts and ends in Grünburg at Leonstein Castle and leads into the valley of the Black Counts. Along the Rinnerberg stream, visitors can discover manor houses as well as blacksmiths’ and servants’ houses. Those looking for a summit route will find “Großer und Kleiner Landsberg”, a summit and circular hike with a short climbing section.
Shared experiences for different age groups
Leonstein Leisure Park features a climbing cube, a skate park and two beach volleyball courts with panoramic views all around. In addition, the Leonstein Family and Adventure Pool operated by the municipality of Grünburg was newly opened in 2002. This makes it possible to combine cultural visits, cycling, hiking and active breaks in different ways. When searching for accommodation, consider which type of experience is most important to your group and base your choice of location on this personal rhythm.
