Discover Peuerbach: Castle, Stars and Urban History

Peuerbach offers unusual combinations for a varied trip: urban history, Gothic architecture, astronomy and paths through a historically shaped landscape are among the defining experiences. Families who want to combine different interests can choose between museums, an walk-in work of art, walking routes and natural history tours. A holiday apartment or holiday home in Peuerbach thus becomes a starting point for a trip whose focus you determine yourself.

Castle, Churches and Gothic Town Centre

A good introduction to the history of the town is Peuerbach Castle. The first Peuerbach Castle was built around 1370 by the Counts of Schaunberg. The Peuerbach Castle Museum houses the exhibition “Kosmos.New Worlds – Georg von Peuerbach and His Legacy”. Local history and the scientific study of the famous astronomer Georg von Peuerbach therefore come together in one place.

The Gothic town centre also makes the past visible in the townscape. It includes numerous Gothic houses around Kirchenplatz, Hauptstraße and Fleischergasse. The narrow Fleischergasse is known for its covered arches and consequently has a particularly distinctive appearance. For groups, a visit to the Peuerbach Castle Museum outside opening hours is also possible with advance notice.

The parish church recalls another pivotal era: after Peuerbach was burned down during the Peasants’ Wars of 1626, its reconstruction began in 1628 and lasted approximately until the middle of the 17th century. The church was later partly remodelled in the Baroque style and extended. The Small Mariahilf Church survived the fire during the Peasants’ War of 1626 and was later remodelled in the Baroque style. It was probably built around 1500 as a foundation by Barbara von Wallsee; its late Gothic design points to this.

Following the Stars

Peuerbach places a striking emphasis on astronomy. The KOMETOR is a walk-in sculpture composed of pentagons on two levels and stands in Peuerbach Castle Park. The sculpture is intended as a gateway to the world of the stars. Its first level was designed interactively: specially created microscopic images are juxtaposed there with photographs from ESA satellites and telescopes. This concept makes the KOMETOR a destination for anyone who would like to explore scientific topics not only in a traditional exhibition format.

The Astro Trail follows the Ledererbach stream. Information panels explain the planets of our solar system as well as the zodiac signs and their astrological significance. The Astro Trail also includes a planetarium and a star map. Depending on your personal interests, you can therefore focus your visit more on the planets, the constellations or the connection between the landscape and astronomy.

Walking Routes, Crafts and Nature

For a trip with a historical focus, the “Eventful Search for Clues in Peuerbach” walking route leads from Peuerbach Castle to the original site of the first battle of the 1626 Peasants’ Revolt at Ledererwiese. The Alm-Mühlen loop runs through the former “Valley of the Seven Mills”. In the past, powerful waterwheels powered mills and hammer mills there. The historical character of this route therefore lies not only in individual buildings, but also in the valley’s former use.

The Shoemaker and Customs Museum explores a different topic. It presents hand tools and machines that were used in the shoemaking trade over many generations. The equipment comes from the shoemaker’s workshop of Karl Kaltseis from Eschenau. In addition, the Upper Austrian Nature Conservation Association offers natural history tours through the diverse flora and fauna of the Koaserin; registration takes place at the town hall.

When looking for accommodation in Peuerbach, you can therefore consider which travel rhythm suits you: historical sightseeing, astronomical topics, walking routes, crafts or observing nature. This allows you to choose your holiday apartment or holiday home according to the experiences you want to shape your trip, without having to commit to just one type of holiday.
