Wullowitz – Trails along the Maltsch and Tobau
Wullowitz combines a unique border history with trails through forests, moorland forest and protected landscapes. This makes the village suitable for travellers who do not want to limit their stay to a single activity: On the L2 Border Trail, you follow the Maltsch, the family-friendly Pottery Trail leads through the forest, and several cycling tours make use of the location along the European Green Belt. Families with children, nature enthusiasts and anyone who wants to discover historical traces along the way will find different opportunities to get to know Wullowitz.
Border Trail along the Maltsch and historical traces
The L2 Border Trail follows the Maltsch for approximately 3 km through the Natura 2000 European protected area and the European Green Belt. Near Eisenhut, the L2 Border Trail joins the Horse-Drawn Railway Hiking Trail. Remains of the horse-drawn railway are visible there – a tangible detail for anyone who wants to combine experiencing nature with the history of technology.
The history of Wullowitz is also closely connected with the border. Wullowitz was a border crossing point in the border system established after the creation of Czechoslovakia. Anyone interested in historical landscapes and the development of border regions can keep this background in mind while exploring the village. The L2 Border Trail crosses the main road approximately 500 m before the Wullowitz border crossing.
Pottery Trail, Tobau and places to stop
The Pottery Trail is a family-friendly themed hiking trail that is particularly suitable for families with children. It leads through the forest near Leitmannsdorf and Stiegersdorf to Wullowitz and runs along the protected Tobau area to the B 310. A small moorland forest area called Tobau has been preserved in Wullowitz. The trail therefore has a different focus from the L2 Border Trail: Here, the forest, the moorland forest area and the themed design of the hike are at the forefront.
Another option is the West Forest Air-Bathing Trail. Its section of the border hike leads to Wullowitz, where there is a place to stop. You can use this information to choose between a family-oriented themed hike, a trail along the Maltsch and a route with a planned stop. Guided hikes through the Tobau moorland area can also be arranged at the Franzosenhof.
Cycling tours, cross-country ski trail and regional cuisine
Wullowitz can also be incorporated into various cycling tours. The Mühlviertel Road-Cycling Hills World – Green Belt Tour leads from Rainbach to Wullowitz and then continues a few metres alongside the Austrian-Czech state border to Leopoldschlag. The “Beer & Nature” Beer Cycling Tour leads through Wullowitz and then along the Maltsch on the European Green Belt to Leopoldschlag. The two options have different emphases: One tour highlights the border location along the state border, while the other combines cycling with the landscape along the Maltsch and regional beer.
For a stay with winter activities, the Franzosenhof cross-country ski trail is another option. It is 10 km long and of moderate difficulty. Its route follows the Maltsch and the Pottery Trail via Leitmannsdorf to the Franzosenhof in Wullowitz; it is possible to join the cross-country ski trail there. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday house, you can therefore first consider whether hiking, cycling, a guided moorland hike or cross-country skiing should be the focus of your trip.
The Franzosenhof is located at Wullowitz 1, directly on the Mühlviertler Bundesstraße B 310 or E 55, approximately 500 m before the Wullowitz border crossing. Regional Austrian dishes and homemade specialities are served there. This combination of regional cuisine, trails and various types of excursions gives you practical guidance for planning your stay in Wullowitz.
