Church, Castle Ruins and Traces of History

The first documentary records of Friedburg date back to 1180. The bishops of Bamberg had Friedburg Castle built as a stronghold on the border between Bavaria and Austria. During the War of the Spanish Succession, the castle was shelled and captured by Austrian troops in 1703. However, the later complex was not preserved as a building: it was completely demolished between 1788 and 1790. Today, the Friedburg castle ruins are protected as a former castle complex under an official preservation order.

An important cultural landmark is the Catholic Parish Church of St. Sebastian, which is protected under an official preservation ordinance. It was built at its present location as the second church and consecrated in 1869. The interior contains several notable features: a high altar dating from 1770, which was transferred to the newer church, as well as 14 Stations of the Cross painted in oils, with frames and Rococo ornaments. A nativity scene with carved heads, hands and feet dates from 1780. Even the church’s smallest bell tells of the older history of the village: it dates from 1475 and comes from the castle chapel. The original Chapel of St. Sebastian was built in 1649 during the time of the plague.

Schlossberg Trails and Nature Experiences

The Schlossberg offers several different themes for planning a day out. A vineyard with 216 vines was planted there in 2008. The Bible Trail to the Hohen Kreuz Chapel on Friedburg’s Schlossberg was also created in 2008. The Legends Trail was created in 2009 on the theme of “Fratricide at Friedburg Castle”. For a longer hiking idea, the Giant Hiking Trail is available. It is approximately 4 km long and leads from Lengau to the church in Friedburg. In Lengau, the Museum Riese von Lengau also commemorates Franz Winkelmeier, who, at a height of 2.58 m, is described as the tallest European ever to have lived. This allows a hike to be combined with a distinctive historical and biographical theme.

The F3 route leads through a nature reserve and then along forest tracks and woodland paths through the forest and natural landscape. It returns to the starting point via Heiligenstatt. The Friedburg-Lengau Running and Walking Park comprises eight different Nordic walking and running routes. The V1 and V2 connecting routes link the park’s route boards in Friedburg, Schneegattern and at the Naturfreundehaus. Another option is the L2 Palfinger Loop, which is classified as a moderately difficult route with firm gravel and asphalt sections. It leads towards Bach and on to Teichstätt, passing wayside shrines and chapels.
