Nauders between Fortresses and Bergkastel

Nauders combines an alpine landscape with an unusually rich history. Historical traces around Nauders

Naudersberg Castle was built at the beginning of the 14th century and was first mentioned in official records in 1325. The upper floors house exhibition rooms, court offices, a castle chapel, an art gallery with works by artists from Nauders, and exhibitions of historical objects. The castle therefore offers various ways to explore the history of the area and regional art.

You can also encounter prominent reminders of the past outside the castle. Nauders Fortress was built around 1840 to protect Tyrol’s southern border. The remains of the Niklas Wall, dating from the early Middle Ages, are also located near the fortress and can still be visited today. High above Nauders, at Plamortboden, numerous anti-tank barriers, bunker systems and combat positions can be viewed following extensive renovation work. The Plamort Trail ends at a historic bunker complex, combining an active mountain experience with a specific historical destination.

Winter Trails and Quiet Mountain Landscapes

Nauders lies at the intersection of three important Alpine valleys. For winter days, 110 kilometres of cleared and groomed winter hiking trails are available. Those looking for a quieter alternative to a day of skiing can plan their trip around these trails. The Bergkastel mountain hiking trail is an easy circular route with varied views below and above the tree line.

The two crystal-clear cirque lakes reveal a different landscape. They are situated in a sparsely vegetated, scree-filled mountain basin and particularly appeal to visitors who want to observe striking natural forms and alpine terrain differences while hiking. The character of these trails and landscapes differs markedly from the supervised activity offerings at Bergkastel.

Bergkastel for Skiing, Tobogganing and Active Days

The Nauders ski area has 75 kilometres of pistes between 1,400 and 2,750 metres above sea level. Thirteen modern lift facilities provide access to runs of all difficulty levels. There are also flow parks with kickers and rails, as well as numerous freeride routes. This selection makes the ski area an important part of the destination’s appeal, without requiring every day of your trip to be spent in the same way.

The Bergkastel cable car provides access to an 8-kilometre toboggan run leading from the mountain station down into the valley. The 6-kilometre Zirmtrail also begins at Bergkastel after taking the Zirmbahn up to an altitude of 2,550 metres. The Hofratstrail leads from the mountain station of the Bergkastel cable car at an altitude of 2,170 metres over 2,222 metres through the Swiss stone pine forest at Bergkastel. For those getting started in cycling, the Bergkastel high plateau has a Bike Base with four trails, accessible by a conveyor belt.

Other experiences focus on playful exploration. At Goldpark Nauders, visitors can pan for gold. The Goldwasser area, directly next to the panorama restaurant, is a small water world with a miniature landscape of huts and footbridges, a pirate ship and a water wheel surrounding a 690 m² play lake. Opposite Nauders Fortress, the Festung climbing garden offers more than 50 climbing routes rated from difficulty level 1 to 7a, including routes suitable for children.

For travel by public transport, regional bus 273 connects Landeck-Zams railway station with Nauders town centre. From there, a free ski bus continues to the mountain lifts.
