Kappl – Culture, Winter Trails and Mountain Experiences

Kappl combines insights into life on the Paznaun alpine pastures with mountain trails, chapels, and a wide range of experiences. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can decide on their preferred travel focus in advance: culture and regional traditions, winter hikes, family excursions, or active days on an e-bike. This makes choosing accommodation a matter of finding the right holiday rhythm, rather than merely a place to spend the night.

Alpine life, chapels, and living traditions

A special way to explore the history of the surrounding area leads to the Alpe Dias Alpine Museum. At original locations, it shows alpine life in Paznaun and its development over the past decades and centuries. The visit is brought to life by the processing and refinement of milk into butter and cheese; homemade cheese adds to the museum experience.

The chapels, too, offer their own cultural discoveries. The Kerker Chapel in Kappl has three wooden figures by the sculptor Johann Ladner dating from 1760. On the way to Dias, the Ruhestein Chapel features a 110-centimetre-high crucifix. The Rotweg Chapel is idyllically nestled in a forest. In Bild, visitors can see an art-historically valuable, polychrome Early Baroque altar dating from around 1680. The chapel in Wiese, in turn, has an altar decorated with angels from the 18th century, featuring depictions of the apostles Peter and Paul, as well as a large, artistically valuable and well-restored carved figure of the Virgin Mary. Around 90 traditional settlements with charming village character complete this picture of regional culture.

Winter trails with different stages

Several clearly distinct options are available for planning your day. The first stage of the “Weisse Weiten” long-distance winter hiking trail covers 15.9 kilometres from See via the hamlet of Oberhaus to the Kappl ski area. The Sesslad winter hiking trail is shorter: it starts at the mountain station of the Diasbahn and ends at the Untere Sessladalpe. The route is 4.66 kilometres long and takes around 1.5 hours. The Dias snowshoe hike starts and ends at the mountain station of the Diasbahn, is 1.8 kilometres long, and takes one hour. Guided winter and snowshoe hikes are also offered in Kappl; snowshoes can be rented locally.

The surrounding area can also be actively explored in summer. The hiking landscape includes rushing streams, flowering meadows, and panoramic views. The summer bus runs every half hour to places from which you can explore the area on foot. For cycling days, there is a varied network of e-bike tours along gentle alpine pasture trails, scenic panoramic routes, and pleasant valley routes.

Mountain experiences

The Sunny Mountain adventure park covers 80,000 square metres at an altitude of more than 1,800 metres. At the mountain station of the Diasbahn, there is disc golf, a low-rope course, and a petting zoo. The Diasbahn reaches an altitude of 1,830 metres, making it an important starting point for several of the mountain experiences described.

Anyone wishing to combine exercise with a specific challenge will find a 2.6-kilometre route in the Kappl Escape Trail, with 166 metres of ascent and 100 metres of descent. A flow trail leads from the mountain station of the Diasbahn over 3.7 kilometres to the historic Egger Chapel. For climbing, the Niederelbehütte sport climbing garden includes the Kreuzjochblick sector with rather sporty routes for advanced climbers, as well as the well-secured Märchenwiese practice climbing garden for beginners and children. Routes measuring 8 to 15 metres in length have been set up there; the approach from the Niederelbehütte takes around 12 minutes. Overall, the sport climbing garden has 18 climbing routes at an altitude of 2,330 metres.
