Discover Faggen: Nature, Trails and Culture

Faggen is situated on the alluvial fan of the Faggenbach at the entrance to the Kaunertal valley. The village combines a striking landscape with historic traces, small chapels and several trails that allow for different types of holiday activities. Nature along the Faggenbach and in the Kaunertal valley

A distinctive landscape feature in Faggen is its dry grasslands. They are part of a nature reserve and are home to a great variety of plant and animal species. Preserved historic irrigation systems, known as waale, are also part of the local landscape history. In 1993, a small prehistoric settlement from the Bronze Age was discovered above Faggen.

Anyone wishing to experience the Faggenbach on foot can include the Faggen Promenade Variant 2 in their plans. It follows the stream to the Faggen Bridge and then continues along the opposite bank to the Faggen Footbridge. Another option is the Kaunerberg Water Trail. It starts at the confluence with the Inn near Faggen or Prutz and leads via Kauns and Kaunerberg, as well as the hamlets of Unterfalpetan and Oberfalpetan, to the Gallruth Tunnel.

Chapels, monuments and memories

The cultural character of Faggen is shaped by several chapels and historic buildings. The former Faggner Wirt was built in 1678 and is protected as an immovable monument under a formal decision. The Weißes Haus Chapel is likewise protected as an immovable monument by regulation. An inscription inside records its construction in 1854 and its renovation in 1958.

The altarpiece from the old chapel, dating from the 18th century, hangs on the rear wall of the new Faggen Chapel. The chapel in Obergufer was renovated in 1995; it contains an old crucifix and a somewhat newer image of the Virgin Mary. The Mariahilf Chapel was built between 1975 and 1977 and consecrated on 2 March 1980. On the way to Außergufer stands the sculpture group “Martin with the Beggar”, created by Engelbert Gitterle from Urgen. Another link to art history is Anton Sturm, who lived from 1690 to 1757, came from Faggen and is best known for his work decorating the collegiate church in Füssen.

Trails for different types of holiday

The Faggen–Außergufer walking trail starts in Prutz or Faggen, passes the Maria Hilf Chapel and continues to the hamlet of Außergufer. For more sporting routes, the Prutz–Faggen–Kauns trail-running route is a good option. It crosses a wooden bridge over the Faggenbach and passes the Fischerranch on the way to Kauns. The route returns to Faggen and Prutz via Innergrufer. Faggen is also suitable for various cycling and mountain-biking tours.

This makes it possible to tailor your choice of accommodation to your preferred holiday focus: walks and cultural-historical discoveries lead in a different direction from a sporting route through several parts of the village. Families travelling with children will find a playground with a slide, climbing frame and swing near the Faggen Chapel. For regional produce and specialities, the Mair farm shop offers products from its own production as well as regional specialities.
