Gschnitz: Mountain Trails, Huts and Winter Experiences

Gschnitz is a destination for travellers who want to actively experience alpine landscapes while choosing between extensive mountain trails, a pleasant family hike and winter cross-country ski trails. Together with Trins, Gschnitz has been part of the Alpine Club’s “Gschnitztal” mountaineering villages since May 2019. Mountain trails for different travel plans

The Gschnitztal hut tour is a particularly memorable experience. It leads around the Gschnitztal mountaineering village in six stages covering a total of 62 km on mountain trails marked black. Those looking for a single, special mountain route can alternatively climb to the pilgrimage chapel of St. Magdalena via a grade B/C via ferrata, which is classified as moderate to difficult. The Alpine Safety Area complements this offering as a training and practice area for mountain hikers and via ferrata climbers.

It is important to take the respective route and its requirements into account during travel planning, without combining different trails into one uniform experience.

Huts, alpine pastures and distinctive mountain destinations

The Padasterjochhaus can be reached from Gschnitz and is considered Austria’s oldest Naturfreunde hut. This combines a specific hiking destination with a piece of alpine history. The Innsbrucker Hütte is located at the foot of the 3,277 m-high Habicht and provides another distinctive point for planning mountain activities. The two destinations appeal to different interests: in one case, the hut itself is the focus, while in the other, it is the location on a high mountain.

For a more leisurely outing, Laponesalm is a good option. The route leads as a pleasant family hike along the Gschnitzbach stream to the head of the valley. A hut taxi to Laponesalm is available by prior reservation. Families can therefore choose between a hike along the stream and travelling by pre-booked taxi. This distinction is also helpful when choosing accommodation if you do not want to spend your holiday days exclusively on long mountain tours.

Winter between cross-country ski trail and hiking path

During the cold season, the approximately 18 km-long Gschnitz cross-country ski trail is available. It is groomed for both classic cross-country skiing and the skating style. A premium winter hiking trail runs parallel to the ski trail. This allows two clearly distinct winter interests to be included in your travel plans: cross-country skiing on the groomed trail or hiking on the parallel winter path. It is best to search for the right holiday apartment with a view to the activities that will actually be the focus of your stay.

An up-to-date note about Mühlendorf

Mühlendorf Gschnitz was almost completely destroyed by a mudslide during severe weather at the beginning of July 2025 and therefore cannot currently be visited. This note is part of the current visitor information. Other experiences, such as the hut tour, the outing to Laponesalm or the winter trails, remain separate travel ideas unaffected by this.
