Teufenbach lies below the castle of the same name, built in the 12th century. Alt-Teufenbach Castle is considered an important element in the development of the settlement. It was a fortified castle blocking the valley and is one of Austria’s oldest castles still inhabited today. The relationship between the castle and the settlement provides a striking introduction to the town’s history.

Castle, Fortified Farmstead and Church

The other historic buildings also reflect different centuries. The Vaßhof is a fortified farmstead belonging to the castle, dating from the 15th century, and is one of Teufenbach’s oldest buildings. The Neu-Teufenbach complex was built in the 16th century. The castle, fortified farmstead and complex thus represent different construction periods, rather than reducing the town’s history to a single building or era. Visitors interested in architecture will find different terms and types of buildings here that can be distinguished while exploring the town.

Teufenbach’s church is a castle church on the eastern edge of the village, not in the town centre. The nave of the parish church of St Margaret is Romanesque in origin. The Kluppentier depicts the dragon of Saint Margaret. In addition to its architectural history, this motif offers a distinct cultural point of interest. The church’s location on the eastern edge is important for finding your way around the village; it is not in the centre.

Summer Retreat and Cycle Route

Transport history also played a part in the development of tourism: the Murtalbahn railway’s growth around the turn of the century contributed to it. At the beginning of the 20th century, the park with its pavilion and Raddörfl Teufenbach was laid out. It included wooden huts for summer retreat guests. The huts were renovated in 1990, and an octagonal pavilion was also built. In this way, the Raddörfl combines the historic summer retreat tradition with practical accommodation options.

The Mur Cycle Route offers a different connection from the historic Murtalbahn railway: the Murau–Judenburg stage passes through Frojach to Teufenbach, giving a cycling tour a clear connection to the area. Along the Mur Cycle Route R2, the Raddörfl offers affordable accommodation; the individual huts can be booked by arrangement. Arrange your booking in advance and check route conditions before setting out. This brings two different perspectives together: historically, the Murtalbahn contributed to the development of tourism, while today the Mur Cycle Route offers a practical reference for planning a tour.

Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Travel Interests

When looking for a holiday apartment in Teufenbach, you can consider whether the historic buildings or cycling will be the main focus of your stay. The castle, Vaßhof and church offer a cultural and historical focus; the Mur Cycle Route stage and the Raddörfl offer a connection to cycling. The Raddörfl huts are a distinct type of accommodation and can be booked by arrangement. When planning a holiday together, this distinction can help you match the type of accommodation to your preferred focus for the trip.
