Mühlen Between Moor, Mountain and History
Accommodation in Mühlen
Mühlen combines mountain scenery, moorland and craftsmanship to create a diverse destination in the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park. The village lies on the sunny side of the Zirbitzkogel in the Murau district and at the foot of the mountain, which reaches 2,396 metres above sea level. The landscape is complemented by museums, trails and water-based activities. When planning your holiday, it is therefore helpful to consider whether you would like to focus primarily on nature, outdoor activities or culture.
Hörfeld Moor, Mountains and Water
The Hörfeld Moor lies between Mühlen and Hüttenberg. It is a nature reserve and a wetland of international importance. It is home to 500 different species of butterflies and moths, as well as 125 bird species. A hiking trail runs around the moor, offering a practical way to explore this natural environment on foot. Lake Mühlen is suitable for swimming and fishing; seasonal conditions may apply to fishing. There is also an adventure trail with several stations around the lake. The moor offers biodiversity and a walk around the wetland, while the lake is a place to swim, fish or follow the trail and its stations.
Trails and Activities
The Hans im Glück hiking adventure is a family-friendly trail with seven stations. The marble run at the Tonnerhütte offers something different: it comprises four unique wooden tracks made from locally sourced larch, with a total length of more than 70 metres. As an alpine adventure, it is suitable for explorers aged 3 to 99. Godi’s archery course offers another activity. It is about 6 km long and currently has more than 80 targets set up. You can choose from a range of outings, including a family trail with stations, the marble run and the archery course.
Local History and Craftsmanship
The branch church of St. Jakob is located above Mühlen on Jakobsberg and was first mentioned in 1316. At the Noreia Celtic Museum, you can see a Bronze Age sword from the Urnfield period; the museum also explains that excavations brought an entire town complex to light. A specific artefact is thus presented alongside an account of a larger archaeological discovery.
The farmers’ museum in Mühlen vividly presents rural life, work and culture. It offers insights into working methods and the tools used up to the 20th century; the demonstration forge showcases the traditional craft of blacksmithing. At the Noreia Historic Experience Forge, visitors can use historic tools to work glowing raw iron over an open forge fire and take home a personal holiday souvenir. Available dates may vary. Check them in advance if you are planning this experience. The history of the village is also linked to the use of water power and the construction of mills.
