Kornriegl combines the history of the “Glirsch” farm with winegrowing, forest trails and tours through the hilly landscape of southwestern Styria. A family holiday here can combine cultural discoveries with outdoor activities.

Winegrowing, Forest and Views

The Glirsch Wine Museum provides an overview of the tradition and background of winegrowing. The Schilcher Museum Tour offers another combination of landscape and regional history: it leads through the forest to the Glirsch Buschenschank with its “Winegrowers’ Museum”. This means that an excursion can focus not only on a route, but also on the development of winegrowing and its importance to the region.

The Glirsch Buschenschank is situated on a hill near the Grenzpanoramaweg trail and the Slovenian border, offering a wonderful view over the hilly landscape of southwestern Styria. This impression of the landscape adds a distinctly visual dimension to the cultural and historical themes.

Hikes and Tours for Different Days of Your Trip

The Turmbauerweg trail in the municipality of Eibiswald is a 6.3 km circular hiking trail with a walking time of around two hours. Anyone who prefers a clearly defined hike can incorporate this information directly into their daily planning. The Schilcher Museum Tour, by contrast, has a different focus, combining the route through the forest with the “Winegrowers’ Museum” near Glirsch.

There are also named options for longer or more active days. The “Große Panoramatour, No. 106” follows the ascent from Oberlatein towards the Glirsch winery via Kornriegl. The mountain bike tour “Tour No. 105 – Around Kapuner” passes the Glirsch farm. The “Flow experience at the giant” circular tour also starts from Glirsch and leads via Kornriegl and Oberlatein to Feisternitz. This allows families or travel groups with different interests to choose their excursions based on walking distance, ascent or cycling route, without making every day of their holiday the same.

A Place with an Unusual History

Kornriegl is also connected with the history of Josef Krainer Sr. After escaping an arrest ordered by the Gestapo in February 1945, he hid for a time at the “Glirsch” farm in Kornriegl. In 1948, he described himself in court as the political representative of the Vienna group “O5”, based in Kornriegl, Styria.

Further historical connections can be found in the area associated with the Koralpe partisans. An organisation referred to as the “Kornriegl Battalion” operated there; it belonged to a unit of the Slovenian partisans operating in the Radl Pass area. Religious traditions are also part of the local experience: at the Jägerkreuz in the “Cathedral of Nature”, a traditional church service was celebrated bilingually, with numerous visitors from both sides of the Radlberg.
