In Wiener Neustadt, the Cultural Trail passes a total of 29 sights over 6.41 kilometres. This gives visitors a direct way to engage with the city’s history, while also offering the opportunity to explore different stops at their own pace. Those looking for a holiday apartment can therefore plan their stay according to their personal interests: with cultural history, remarkable buildings, a city park and culinary impressions.

City History and Impressive Casemates

The St. Peter an der Sperr Museum offers a tour through more than 800 years of Wiener Neustadt’s history. The casemates are another main attraction. Thanks to their excellent state of preservation, they are unique in Austria and are protected as historic monuments. During a guided tour of the casemates, visitors pass through the “The City as a Fortress” exhibition, defensive passageways, multimedia stations and 3D models.

The cathedral is also part of the city’s historical orientation. Construction began shortly after the city was founded, around 1200, in the Romanesque style. Those interested in the development of medieval cities, ecclesiastical architecture and military history will therefore find several different ways to explore past eras in Wiener Neustadt.

Castle, Reckturm Tower and Military Heritage

Wiener Neustadt Castle is closely associated with the Theresian Military Academy. In 1751, Empress Maria Theresa made the castle the world’s oldest military academy still in existence today. During a guided tour in front of the famous coat-of-arms wall of the Theresian Military Academy, visitors can also find a possible explanation for the abbreviation AEIOU formulated by Emperor Frederick III.

The Reckturm Tower contains foundation walls dating from the early 13th century as well as a small privately run weapons museum. It displays firearms from 1630 to 1950, historical cutting and thrusting weapons, and equipment used by the Austro-Hungarian army. A collection associated with Neukloster Abbey comprises around 4,700 individual items. The 50-metre-high water tower was once part of the Kaiser Franz Joseph water pipeline and remains a regulating reservoir to this day. These buildings and collections add further historical highlights to the trip alongside the classic city tour.

City Park, Playground and Regional Products

The city park is ideal for a change of pace between the city’s densely narrated history and a more peaceful setting. It features winding paths and numerous places to sit. There is also a large children’s playground with Lower Austria’s highest play tower. If you are travelling with children, you can plan the park as a separate item on your itinerary without giving up the cultural side of your stay.

There is also a regional connection with an international addition when it comes to food: at Marienmarkt, “Maria Rosa fresco e pronto” opened as a shop selling fresh meat and sausage products from Italy, Austria and the region. This is an interesting stop for travellers who also want to experience products and specialities from different places of origin while exploring the city.

Practical Guidance for Finding Accommodation

Wiener Neustadt railway station is within walking distance of the city centre. When planning your holiday apartment, you can therefore first consider whether you want to focus on city history, guided tours, walks in the city park or a combination of several experiences. The Cultural Trail is 6.41 kilometres long, while the museum, casemates, cathedral, castle, Reckturm Tower and water tower each offer their own historical themes. This allows you to structure your stay according to your interests without trying to fit all the sights into a single itinerary.

If you would also like to compare other places for planning your trip, you can find Sollenau, Miesenbach, Bromberg, Weikersdorf am Steinfelde, Kirchschlag In Der Buckligen Welt, Bad Erlach, Pernitz and Rohr Im Gebirge here.
