Discover Bromberg: Witches’ Trail, Fortified Church and Hilly Landscape
Accommodation in Bromberg
Bromberg combines traces of history with a varied hilly landscape. A themed trail around 3 km long, distinctive churches and chapels, and picturesque cycling routes through meadows, fields and forests give your stay different focal points. Those travelling with varied interests can incorporate culture, exercise and scenery into their daily plans here.
Discover the Witches’ Trail and hilly landscape
The Bromberg Witches’ Trail begins in Bromberg-Au and follows the Schlattenbach stream for around 3 km. As a historical themed trail, it was created in 1999 as part of a village renewal project. A special stop is the Hexenbrünnl spring behind Bromberg Mountain Church. You can reach it via a gently ascending forest path in approximately 15 minutes. The specific route length and the described nature of the trail provide useful guidance if you would like to plan an excursion with a manageable route.
The Dreibuchen Chapel on Dreibuchenhöhe also combines landscape and history. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views over the surrounding hilly landscape. The first measures to build the chapel are dated to the period from 1683 to 1720. This allows you to combine an experience in nature with a historical destination without having to plan both interests separately.
Bromberg Fortified Church and historical heritage
Bromberg Fortified Church, also known as Mountain Church, has loopholes and a unique "mountain tower". Its upper floors, which are very difficult to access, contain concealed vault chambers for the secure storage of valuable goods. A free smartphone audio guide with 14 chapters is available for Mountain Church. Each chapter contains an image, and the total length is around 26 minutes. The fortified church is also part of the Bucklige Welt Fortified Churches Route.
Further historical clues can be found in the upper Schlattental valley, today’s southeastern municipal area of Bromberg. The field name "Schloßberg" and remains of walls are reminders of a castle that the Lords of Slat built on a hill around 1250. To the west, opposite the parish church, the plague cross erected in 1681 commemorates a plague epidemic.
Churches, frescoes and discoveries
The parish church of St. Lambert contains a significant cycle of wall paintings created around 1580. St. Lambert’s Church is also decorated with a huge 14th-century fresco of St. Christopher. In the village centre, the old rectory dates from the 15th century. The adjoining Florian Chapel has magnificent frescoes from the 16th century, which were not discovered until after the 1972 earthquake. These different eras make Bromberg particularly interesting for travellers who prefer to explore historical details through specific buildings and paintings.
Cycling and the right accommodation
Bromberg offers picturesque cycling routes through meadows, fields and forests, climbing up to the surrounding hills. Depending on the focus of your holiday, you can therefore combine cultural discoveries with a ride through the landscape. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home in Bromberg, it is worth considering which experiences are most important for your trip: the Witches’ Trail along the Schlattenbach, the churches and chapels with their historical features, or the cycling routes through the hilly landscape.
