Discover Dorfstetten: Forests, Trails and Special Experiences
Accommodation in Dorfstetten
Dorfstetten combines the dark fir and spruce forests of the Weinsberg Forest with special excursion destinations, traces of history and opportunities for active days. The village is located in the upper part of the small Yspertal valley and is a starting point for numerous hikes. Anyone wishing to combine a trip with children, shared experiences in nature and cultural discoveries will find a range of ideas for planning their days here.
Experience Village History and Craftsmanship
A cultural introduction is provided by the Catholic parish church of St. Ulrich. It is dedicated to Saint Ulrich, and its oldest sections of wall date from the 14th century. The Baroque onion dome and Gothic tracery windows give the building a distinctive appearance. The cemetery and parish church are also protected as historic monuments by official decree. The name Dorfstetten was first mentioned in 1275.
At the Dorfstetten leisure facility, a working demonstration mill and a Venetian sawmill with original exhibits show how grain becomes bread and logs become boards. Guided tours explain these processes clearly. For groups, tours of the demonstration mill and Venetian sawmill are available for 10 or more people by prior arrangement. If you are travelling with several people, this experience can therefore be specifically included in your plans.
Forests, Water and Trails for Shared Days
The landscape pond is set in an idyllic natural environment and invites visitors to relax and linger all year round. Right next to it, the nature playground gives children plenty of space to play and run around. Since May 2025, a natural skittles alley at the leisure facility has expanded the range of activities. It is suitable for families, groups of friends, club evenings or an active afternoon.
There are various destinations and types of trail to choose from for hiking. Hiking trail Burgsteinmauer No. 94 leads through the high forest to the Burgsteinmauer. The challenging ascent over uneven ground is rewarded with a magnificent view. Hinteredtwanderung trail No. 96 leads to the Hubertus Chapel, which is located about 200 metres behind the forester's lodge. Numerous small monuments can be explored on a walk or along the signposted meditation trail. There is ample free parking at Kirchenplatz, which is also the starting point for the hiking trails.
Active Experiences in the Waldviertel Highlands
The 3D course operated by Bogensport Waldviertel in the Yspertal high forest offers another way to experience the forest actively. The course can be used year-round, provided weather conditions and snow levels permit. Bow rental, including the necessary equipment, and a short introductory briefing are available by prior arrangement.
Riders in Dorfstetten also have direct access to the riding trail networks of the Mühlviertler Alm and the Waldviertler Hochland horse paradise. If you prefer discovering regional products, you can visit Honighaus Frasl. Various types of honey, beeswax candles, propolis drops, mead, honey vinegar and oxymel are produced there; the farm's own shop provides an opportunity to purchase them.
