Pöchlarn combines an impressive cultural history with experiences along the Danube. Between museums, historic buildings, guided city tours and ways by the water, you can make your stay varied and enjoyable. It is particularly appealing to choose between a culture-focused day, a guided tour and some time out by the river or pond.

Discover museums and historic traces

A good starting point for exploring culture in Pöchlarn is the Kokoschka Museum Pöchlarn. The artist Oskar Kokoschka’s birthplace houses a permanent exhibition on his life and work; there are also special exhibitions that change annually. From 28 March to 26 October 2026, the museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A guided tour takes place every Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Advance registration is required at the Arelape-Bechelaren-Pöchlarn Town Museum for groups and for visits outside opening hours.

The Roman Town Museum Arelape Bechelaren Pöchlarn is housed in the Welserturm tower. Across several levels, it displays archaeological finds, Roman excavations and fascinating everyday objects from times gone by. At the same time, the exhibition tells the story of the town’s development and brings the Roman past of what was then Arelape to life. This allows you to combine a museum visit with a glimpse into the site’s long history.

The religious and medieval evidence also gives Pöchlarn a distinctive cultural character. The Frauenkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt is a three-aisled hall church whose construction began in 1386. Its interior includes three paintings by Kremser Schmidt. The parish church of Mariae Himmelfahrt has a late Gothic core and was given a Baroque makeover by Johann Michael Ehmann in 1766–68.

The Nibelungen Monument is freely accessible. In addition, “The Nibelungs in the Tower” presents restored Nibelung figures at several stations that guide visitors through the story of the medieval heroic epic. The Urfahrturm, also called Demmerturm, is a former fortification tower on Pöchlarn’s eastern town boundary. Pöchlarn Renaissance Castle is a cultural monument directly on the Danube.

Danube, walks and cycle paths

For a break between sightseeing stops, the Donau.Auszeit.Wiese offers a place by the river. Walkers and cyclists can picnic or linger there while enjoying the view across the Danube. The Zehenbad is another spot by the water: here you can relax, listen to the gentle splashing and refresh your toes.

Those who want to experience the landscape along a walking route can follow the Rüdigerweg, which runs alongside several bodies of water. It leads along the Stadt Weyer pond, continues beside the Erlauf to its confluence with the Danube and then follows the Danube back to the starting point. For cyclists, the Kultur-Schatz-Tour connects the Danube Cycle Path, the Erlauftal Cycle Path and the Melktal Cycle Path.

Guided city tours for different travel groups

A guided city tour in Pöchlarn follows the Danube embankment, through the lanes and to the picturesque squares. City tours can be individually tailored for travel groups, company outings, school trips and extended families. This is an interesting option if you want to discover historical topics together and adapt the tour to your own group.

For families with different interests, this makes it possible to plan a varied stay: while museums, churches and Nibelung displays offer cultural discoveries, the places by the water and the paths along the Erlauf and Danube provide a different daily rhythm. This allows you to alternate between focused sightseeing, a guided city tour and breaks outdoors without limiting your destination to just one holiday theme.

The right holiday apartment for planning your trip

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Pöchlarn, it helps to first decide on your preferred focus. If you want to place culture and history at the centre of your stay, the Kokoschka Museum, the Roman Town Museum, churches, towers and the Nibelungs in the Tower take centre stage. If you would rather spend your days walking, cycling and enjoying time by the water, Donau.Auszeit.Wiese, Zehenbad and the Rüdigerweg will fit into your plans.

Pöchlarn offers an unusual combination of Roman and medieval history, art, panoramic views of the Danube and winding paths through the landscape.
