Langau combines water-based activities, extensive trails and vivid regional history. Mining Lake lies outside the village towards the national border and is an important part of the local leisure activities. There is also the “Stille Pfade” trail network, the Langau Leisure Museum, historic buildings and a rail connection served by the Reblaus Express. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment in Langau can therefore plan their stay around a variety of interests: days by the water, excursions on foot or by bike, insights into history and special discoveries for travellers both young and old.

Swimming and water sports at Mining Lake

The bathing area at Mining Lake has a large sunbathing lawn, two showers and a non-swimmer area. At the Langau Leisure Centre, visitors can sunbathe, swim, bathe and play; changing rooms are also available there. The beach volleyball court by the lake can be used at any time. This allows a stay by the water to be planned in different ways, so that not every day has to be the same.

Anyone wishing to try or further develop their water-sports skills will find a wide range of courses at the Langau Water Ski Centre. In cooperation with WSC Tulln-Langau, courses are offered for all age groups and every level, from beginner courses to specialised training for experienced participants. Mining Lake also has designated spots for relaxing in nature. “Tut gut” hiking trails run along the lake, and Mining Lake is particularly appealing to anglers who practise “Catch & Release”.

Trails for walks, bike tours and discoveries

The “Stille Pfade” trail network is suitable for walks, family cycling and sport cycling. It connects Langau with all neighbouring municipalities and almost the entire Horn district. This means you can plan your excursions in very different ways: as a leisurely walk, a shared bike tour or a sport-focused day. Langau is also an ideal starting point for the Waldviertel Leisure Tour.

The Langau Leisure Trail leads to a plant labyrinth and towards the large Mining Lake. Brown coal was mined in an open-cast operation at this lake during the last century. The bee nature trail at Langau Mining Lake, with its observation beehive, provides further insight into the history of the landscape and its uses. Numerous bee colonies live there; the observation beehive also includes a wild-bee station. Anyone looking for an active change of pace can explore the Langau leisure climbing garden. It has a 60-metre-long route that is intended to be climbed without contact with the ground.

Leisure museum and historic village scenery

The Langau Leisure Museum houses a diorama of the former Langau brown-coal mine from its heyday in the 1950s. The museum also shows how people used to celebrate festivals. It therefore complements the experiences at Mining Lake with a look at the village’s past.

The village itself also offers historical points of interest. The parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was first mentioned in the first half of the 13th century and features medieval and late Gothic architectural elements. The St John of Nepomuk column in Langau is a Baroque column dating from 1728. These destinations are suitable for anyone wishing to combine their trip not only with exercise and nature, but also with architectural history.

Langau as a starting point for planning your trip

The Reblaus Express runs from Retz to Drosendorf and stops in Langau. When planning your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether you would like to focus primarily on water, trails, climbing activities, nature observation or culture. A holiday apartment in Langau is well suited to a trip where you want to switch freely between relaxing at Mining Lake, active outings and regional discoveries each day.
