Discover Eggenburg
Accommodation in Eggenburg
Eggenburg combines medieval urban history with unusual collections, distinctive rock formations and varied cycling routes. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Eggenburg can therefore plan their stay according to different interests: the city walls and museums offer cultural discoveries, while circular tours and paths through the landscape add their own special touches.
Medieval history and special collections
The Krahuletz Museum presents extensive geological, palaeontological and archaeological collections on the natural and cultural history of northwestern Lower Austria. For seasonal planning, its opening hours are important: from 1 April to 30 November, the museum is open from 10:00 to 16:00, Tuesdays to Sundays and on public holidays. In front of the museum, a small park contains 22 rock steles representing the stones of the Waldviertel region.
Another side of the town is revealed at Nostalgiewelt. Historical music boxes are displayed there, some of which can be played. The collection is complemented by pinball machines and old arcade games. The 460-year-old Gilli Mill is also one of the noteworthy stops; it was converted from a grain mill into an oil mill. The collection of the Priv. unif. Bürgerkorps is housed in the 600-year-old Kanzlerturm. Visits to this museum are only possible with advance booking by telephone.
City walls, circular walk and guided tour
The city-wall circular route is a walking path around and through the medieval town of Eggenburg, leading to the most important sights. At two points, by the monastery church and at the Kanzlerturm, visitors can climb onto the city wall. Those who would like to explore the history not only on their own can take part in a guided town tour. Medievally dressed guides lead visitors through the town.
For a cultural stay, the city walls, town tour and collections can be combined. Those who want to combine several interests can also plan an additional day for a cycling route or a geological discovery.
Cycling routes for different requirements
The „Riesling“ wine cycling route is a moderately difficult day tour of approximately 45 km. It begins in medieval Eggenburg and takes the form of a circular tour through numerous villages with unique historic sights. It therefore offers a longer, self-contained opportunity to combine cycling with historical impressions.
The cycling route 7 is more demanding. It starts at Eggenburg railway station and crosses the Weinviertel region from west to east. The two routes therefore represent different ways of planning a day: the „Riesling“ circular route returns to Eggenburg, while Route 7 has a different character because it crosses the Weinviertel region. When choosing your holiday apartment, consider which type of excursion better suits your travel plans.
Hollow ways and distinctive rocks
The „Stone & Wine“ trail leads through a hollow way lined with 19th-century cellars. These cellars are dug into glacial loess that was transported by the wind to the eastern side of the hilltop. Near Eggenburg, at Grafenberg, the Kogelsteine display weathering forms typical of granite, known as wool-sack weathering. Another distinctive rock formation is the Fehhaube near Stoitzendorf.
This allows you to experience Eggenburg, depending on your day’s objective, as a cultural destination, a starting point for a cycling tour or an opportunity for a geological discovery.
