Neuhaus reveals itself through an unusual combination of castle and church history, contemporary art and paths into the landscape. The parish church is part of the castle complex; the pond, forest school and cycling routes offer further themes for your stay. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is worth deciding first what you would like to focus on: will your time be devoted mainly to culture, outdoor activities or a mix of both?

Castle, Church and the History of Neuhaus

The castle, or fortified house, from which the place name Neuhaus derives is documented in records around 1249. In 1694, two Venetians established a mirror factory in the castle. The parish church adds its own distinctive feature to the complex: it was built between 1610 and 1612 as a Protestant Church of the Redeemer with a family crypt. The well-known VIA SACRA pilgrimage route runs from Vienna to Mariazell and passes the Neuhaus parish church, bringing the church building and pilgrimage route together here.

The renovated Neuhaus Castle in the Neuhaus district is a visitor attraction worth seeing. The renovated main castle, together with the rose garden, parish hall, castle terrace, castle hall and “Gwölb”, forms the Neuhaus Castle event centre. Guided castle tours are offered by prior arrangement on the first Sunday of each month at 10 a.m. for groups of five or more. Expert-led Sommerfrische Neuhaus tours visit surviving sites from this glittering era. As arrangements and event dates may change, check the latest information before your visit.

Art and Seasonal Highlights

Founded in 2013, Atelier Bajadere is a gallery dedicated to presenting and promoting contemporary visual art, with a focus on painting. Its programme includes ten to twelve exhibitions each year. From May to October, sculptures and other sculptural works are also displayed outdoors. If you are travelling during this period, check in advance what is currently on show. The exhibition programme and seasonal outdoor displays offer different ways to make art part of your stay.

The Pond and Paths: Choosing Your Experience

Neuhaus Pond was declared a natural monument in 1987. During its restoration in 2000–2001, a shallow-water zone was created, among other measures, and steps were taken to improve water quality and make the pond more attractive to visitors seeking recreation. The pond is therefore notable both for its protected status and for its design for recreational use.

There are other specific options for getting active. Neuhaus Forest School can be reached via a footpath from the castle. The cycle route from Neuhaus to Weissenbach is mostly flat; in Weissenbach, it connects to cycle routes towards Kaumberg–Hainfeld and Berndorf–Leobersdorf. Check these onward connections before setting out. The route differs on the Große Peilsteinrunde via Hafnerberg: its descent to Neuhaus alternates between meadows and stretches of woodland. This gives you a choice between a mostly flat cycling connection and a route through varied landscapes.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Neuhaus, you can start by considering the experiences you have planned. If you want to include a castle tour or a Sommerfrische tour, check the latest dates and conditions first; for outdoor art, the period from May to October is specified. Cyclists should also check onward connections.
