Oberwaltersdorf between Local History and the Triesting

Oberwaltersdorf combines an impressive local history with ideas for nature and leisure activities for holidays planned in a variety of ways. Those interested in culture can discover listed buildings, industrial history and traces of the painter Broncia Koller. Anyone who enjoys spending time outdoors can include the Triestingau Cycle Path or the floodplain landscape along the Triesting in their travel plans. The Oberwaltersdorf swimming lake and the FONTANA Golf Club provide further possible focal points.

Industrial History, Art and Listed Buildings

A special gateway to the history of the town is provided by the Oberwaltersdorf Local History Museum, housed in the feather factory. The museum focuses on researching the painter Broncia Koller. From 1912/13, parts of the industrial complex served as a studio and residential building for Broncia Koller, while Josef Hoffmann designed the extension to the Koller buildings. Koller House became a meeting place for Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, Egon Schiele and other figures from Viennese society. A group of idealists began collecting and conducting research in 2004.

The Old Spinning Mill also tells of the industrial past. It developed from a spinning-goods factory built in 1818 and is one of the few industrial monuments in Lower Austria preserved almost in their original condition. The renovation and restoration work on the former Koller House in Pfarrgasse was completed by honorary citizen Wilfried Schnedl. He also carried out the restoration of Oberwaltersdorf Castle. Oberwaltersdorf Castle, together with its granary, is protected as a listed monument under a decision pursuant to Section 3.

Further historical points of reference include the former synagogue building at Badener Straße 13, which is protected as a listed monument under a decision pursuant to Section 3, as well as the listed Visintini footbridge. The Catholic parish church of Saint James the Elder is protected as a listed monument under an ordinance. It is dedicated to Saint James the Elder; the oldest documentary evidence of the Oberwaltersdorf parish church dates from 1252. The Europa Fountain was erected at Kirchenplatz in September 1997. It contains a stone from each EU member state.

Cycling, Water and Golf

The Triestingau Cycle Path explicitly runs through Oberwaltersdorf. It follows level paths along the Triesting through a natural floodplain area. This makes it possible to plan a varied stay even if you would like to combine cultural sightseeing with time in the countryside. The floodplain landscape extends west and north of Oberwaltersdorf along the Triesting.

The Oberwaltersdorf swimming lake offers another leisure idea. The 0.5-hectare lake is surrounded by a large sunbathing lawn and shade-providing trees. The swimming lake has beach volleyball and giant chess. The FONTANA Golf Club has an 18-hole championship course. From 2006 to 2009, the course hosted the European Tour in Austria. The clubhouse contains a restaurant and a pro shop.
