Schiefling Am See: Discover the Lake, Nature and Culture

Schiefling Am See combines Lake Wörthersee with a distinctive cultural landscape around Kathreinkogel. The market town of Schiefling am Wörthersee borders Lake Wörthersee to the south for a length of around 4 km. At the same time, trails lead through the Keutschach Lake Valley, while churches, archaeological sites and special natural spots make a wide variety of holiday days possible. When choosing your holiday apartment, it is therefore worth considering in advance whether you are mainly looking for lake experiences, culture, walks or varied days with children.

Lake, landscape and trails

At 772 m, Kathreinkogel is the municipality’s most prominent geographical point. Austria’s only wishing tree stands on its summit: visitors hang their wishes on wooden plaques on the tree. This makes the mountain a destination with an unusual, personal detail that fits well as a special item on an excursion itinerary.

The Keutschach Lake Valley Natura Trail runs from Schiefling to Lake Hafnersee. In addition, hiking trails lead through the internationally recognised Ramsar area “Moor and Lake Landscape of the Keutschach Lake Valley”. There are numerous botanical and zoological rarities there. Anyone wishing to include nature observation and trails through a diverse lake and moorland landscape in their holiday planning will find a clear focus for organising their days.

The Trattnigteich pond is located near Schiefling. This artificial small body of water has largely natural, forest-covered shores; the northern shore in particular is important for local swimming activities. Trattnigteich is also suitable as a fishing experience in Schiefling am Wörthersee. This allows a day of swimming and a fishing experience to be considered as different interests when planning a trip, without every holiday day having to look the same.

Culture and history at Kathreinkogel

Kathreinkogel is also important for visitors interested in cultural history. A settlement dating from the 12th century BC was excavated on the mountain. The archaeological site includes, among other things, a fort with an Early Christian church and a burial ground located to the southwest. The House of Archaeology displays exhibits from the excavations on Kathreinkogel as well as from other excavation sites in Carinthia.

For orientation on site, it is helpful to know that the House of Archaeology can be reached from the Kreuzwirt car park in around 30 minutes on foot. Anyone planning this visit can already take the approximate walking time into account when organising the day. A stop for Wörthersee shipping is located by the “Weißes Rössl” beach café.

The sacral buildings also complement the cultural offering. The branch church of St Catherine on Kathreinkogel is a single-nave Romanesque building with a Late Gothic choir and rib vault; it was first mentioned in a document in 1385. Schiefling is also home to the parish church of St Michael, a listed church building. This means that during a stay by the lake, you can also include historic architecture and regional church history in your selection.

Active days and activities for different age groups

The Generations Park offers exercise and play opportunities as well as areas for sitting and relaxing for everyone from toddlers to adults. It also includes nature experiences, sporting activities and coordination training. If you are travelling with children of different ages, this place can therefore be a concrete part of your day planning, while other members of your group may prefer the Natura Trail, Kathreinkogel or Trattnigteich.

The right base for your stay

When looking for a holiday apartment in Schiefling Am See, you can base your decision on the experiences you want. Those interested in culture should include the archaeological site, the House of Archaeology and the churches in their planning. For nature days, the Natura Trail, the Ramsar area and Trattnigteich offer different themes. Anyone wishing to include Lake Wörthersee will find further concrete reference points in the approximately 4 km-long southern lakeshore boundary and the Wörthersee shipping stop.
