Four lakes, a moor and a prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement give Keutschach Am See a distinctive character. Nature is a central theme alongside a history that reaches back to prehistoric times: the pile-dwelling settlement in Lake Keutschach is part of the UNESCO World Heritage, while paths through the moorland and to named destinations offer a range of activities. When planning your holiday, you can therefore decide whether to focus more on cultural history, landscapes or particular routes.

Four lakes and the Keutschach Moor

Keutschach Am See is located in the unspoilt Four Lakes Valley. The lakes are Rauschelesee, Keutschacher See, Hafnersee and Baßgeigensee. The Keutschach Moor also shapes the area’s natural attractions: it has been part of the international Ramsar Convention for many years. Visitors interested in the sensitive moorland habitat can explore it via the educational moorland trail. The circular trail is seven kilometres long, and twelve information boards explain the moor. The walk thus combines a specific route length with information about the habitat along the way.

Pile-dwelling history and historic buildings

The prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement in Lake Keutschach has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps” since 2011. It is the oldest pile-dwelling settlement known to date in Austria. At the World Heritage display in the Keutschach municipal office, you can learn more about the settlement; original finds from the site are also on display there. Its World Heritage status, its distinctive place in Austria’s history and the artefacts each offer a different way to explore the history of the pile dwellings.

Keutschach Castle was built in the first decades of the 16th century and today serves as the administrative and cultural centre of the town and municipality. St. Nikolai Keutschach Church was built in 1150 and dedicated to Saint Nicholas. In chronological terms, the church’s history dates back further, while the castle’s present-day role also makes it a useful landmark in the town.

Compare routes and experiences

The routes differ in length, course and theme. In addition to the seven-kilometre educational moorland trail, the ten-kilometre Natura Trail Keutschacher Seental runs through the landscape. It is very flat and easy to manage with a pushchair. You can choose between a shorter circular walk through the moor, with twelve explanatory information boards, and a longer, flat themed trail specifically described as pushchair-friendly.

For a cycling tour, the Löffler Runde Keutschach starts at Keutschach Castle and follows a cycle path to St. Nikolai. The Pyramidenkogelweg Keutschach starts at the panoramic information board by the municipal office, passes the ruins of Reifnitz Castle and continues to the observation tower on Pyramidenkogel. The routes can therefore also be compared by their stated starting points and destinations.

The observation tower features a 120-metre-long covered adventure slide, described as the highest in Europe. If this experience is important to your outing, check the current visitor information in advance.

When looking for a holiday apartment, use your preferred focus for your holiday as a guide: for example, pile-dwelling history and buildings, moorland and lakes, or routes with different terrain profiles. Consider which of these themes you would like to include in your plans, and choose your accommodation accordingly.
