Reisach: Churches, Wayside Shrines and the Jochalm Loop
Accommodation in Reisach
Reisach appeals to travelers who want to discover cultural history through specific buildings and stories passed down over time. The parish church, two wayside chapels and the legend of Troi Risa give the village a historical focus. There is also the K2 mountain biking loop and the processing of milk into Gailtal Alpine cheese at the Reisacher Joch Alm. This offers a range of interests to consider when planning a holiday: architectural history, local traditions and an active cycling tour.
Architectural history of the parish church
The Catholic parish church of Saints Peter and Paul is a listed building. This simple late-classical structure dates from 1850, stands on elevated ground and has a north tower. A Gothic vault from the predecessor building has been preserved in the tower’s ground floor. This means that two construction periods can be distinguished in one building: the late-classical church and the older vault, which bears witness to the predecessor building. This contrast is especially interesting if you appreciate not only a building’s date, but also surviving traces of earlier structures.
Troi-Stöckl and Gangl-Stöckl
The listed Troi-Stöckl is a wayside chapel on the Gailtalstraße B111. According to legend, the Stöckl, which still stands today, is said to commemorate the city of Troi Risa, which was buried by a landslide from the Reißkofel around 470 AD. The story brings together a named place, the Reißkofel and a past dated only approximately. This tradition therefore differs from the architectural history of the parish church.
The Gangl-Stöckl brings together other traces of different periods. This culturally significant Gothic wayside shrine dates from 1499. The Roman gravestone of the customs-house slave Amandus is also built into it. A Gothic structure and a Roman monument thus meet in one building. Along with the parish church, these features offer different ways to explore Reisach’s history: a surviving part of a predecessor building, a legend and a wayside shrine with an embedded gravestone.
Jochalm, mountain biking loop and Alpine cheese
For a different kind of trip, the Reisach-Jochalm Loop K2 offers a specific point of reference. The mountain biking tour is 18.3 kilometers long, with a stated duration of 3.5 hours. Check the tour details before planning, as they may be updated. The Reisacher Jochalm can be reached either via Reisach or Grafendorf on a well-maintained gravel road; access by minibus is possible. The distance and stated duration provide an initial time frame for the cycling tour, while the access information specifies the routes and type of road mentioned.
Food production is another of Reisach’s special features: all the milk at the Reisacher Joch Alm is processed directly at the alm into Gailtal Alpine cheese. This adds a distinctive Alpine pasture theme to the buildings and mountain biking tour.
Plan your stay in Reisach around your interests
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can use your travel interests as a guide. If churches, chapels and architectural history are your main focus, Reisach offers several clearly distinct historical themes. If you want to include a mountain biking tour, the loop, distance and stated duration provide a separate framework for planning. The legend of Troi Risa offers a different perspective from the specific dates associated with the buildings. This lets you choose the focus of your stay without combining these different aspects into a single experience.
