Vorderberg: Churches, Gorge and Gail Valley Routes
Vorderberg combines sacred sites, paths along the Gail and distinctive landscapes into a destination offering many different discoveries. Between the pilgrimage church, Vorderberg Gorge, cycle paths and alpine pastures, you can shape your days around culture, activity or changing priorities. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, it is therefore worthwhile to consider the experiences you want and your personal daily planning.
Churches, Gorge and Sacred Art
A special place is Maria im Graben. The pilgrimage church is regularly visited by pilgrims and stands at the entrance to the deep Vorderberg Gorge, located south of Vorderberg. The church has Late Gothic frescoes in the choir. Thus, religious significance and an impressive landscape designation come together directly at this location.
The parish church of Saints Peter and Paul also offers details worth seeing. It is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul and is described as a small Late Gothic building with a mighty tower and a Baroque onion dome. Inside is a Late Gothic winged altar from the branch church of Maria im Graben; the shrine contains a carved Vesper image. Those interested in church art, regional history and pilgrimage traditions will find several specific points of interest here for their stay.
The cultural spectrum also includes Paradies. This is a series of buildings surrounded by a wall that serves as accommodation and a presentation venue for the artistic works of Cornelius Kolig. This place adds another artistic perspective to the sacredly influenced sights.
Cycle Paths, Circular Tours and Routes to the Alpine Pastures
For cyclists, the R3 cycle path is significant, also known as the Gail Valley Cycle Path. It runs for around 80 kilometres from Kötschach-Mauthen to Warmbad Villach along the Gail. Near Vorderberg, the cycle path passes through the area of the municipality of St. Stefan im Gailtal. The natural swimming pool in Vorderberg is located directly on the R3 and offers cyclists an opportunity to refresh themselves.
Shorter routes also pass through notable points in the village. The Gail Valley Circular Route HP11 crosses a stream by the church in the centre of Vorderberg, passes the Vorderberg natural swimming pool and then crosses the Gail. The 3-Lakes Circular Route HP10 also leads into the village centre, crosses a bridge, passes the natural swimming pool and then crosses the Gail. The Matschiedl Rauterbauer ST1 mountain bike tour also starts at the bridge over the Vorderberg stream near the church.
Those planning a longer hike can consider the first day of the four-day Alpine Pasture Hike: The route leads from the railway station past the Church of Maria im Graben and uphill to Werbutzalm at 1,450 m and Feistritzer Alm at 1,715 m. Oisternig rises to 2,052 m west of the route. The Marienpilgerweg pilgrimage route leads from Feistritz for 8 km along the Gail Valley Cycle Path R3 to Vorderberg and then for 1 km along the Vorderberg Wildbach stream to the pilgrimage church of Maria im Graben.
Arrival and Choosing Accommodation
Vorderberg can be reached by train, and bicycles can be taken along. From St. Stefan-Vorderberg railway station, the Rail & Trail route reaches the Gail Bridge to Vorderberg in just a few minutes. In the associated municipality, parking spaces as well as covered parking areas for mopeds and bicycles are available at St. Stefan-Vorderberg railway station. This information is particularly helpful if you choose your holiday apartment as a base for cycling and hiking days and do not want to plan your journey exclusively by car.
For your choice of location, you can weigh up different travel ideas: Churches and art favour a culturally oriented day, the R3 and circular tours favour planning by bicycle, while the Marienpilgerweg and the Alpine Pasture Hike focus on longer routes. The Gail at the bridge to Vorderberg carries crystal-clear water and is lined with dense deciduous forest on both banks. In this way, the landscape complements the cultural destinations with its own nature-oriented impression.
