Illmitz: Nature Experiences amid the Lakes and National Park
Illmitz combines unique landscapes with impressive nature experiences. The focus is on shallow lakes, wet meadows, siltation zones and the national park. If you are looking for a holiday apartment as a starting point for varied days, you can choose between walks, round trips, wildlife watching and a visit to the National Park Centre here.
Discover the Lakescape and Birdlife
The National Park Centre is located on the northern outskirts of Illmitz and offers a year-round exhibition providing information about the flora and fauna of the Seewinkel region. This allows you to combine your stay with an introduction to the landscape before setting out on individual nature experiences.
The Stinkerseen, Hölle & Lettengrube route leads past the Upper, Middle and Lower Stinkersee lakes and through their siltation zones. The Illmitzer Zicksee & Geiselsteller route offers a different perspective: it runs through wet meadows and along the edges of shallow lakes that serve as breeding grounds for meadow-nesting waders. During dry periods, salt efflorescence on the shallow lakes and in the seasonally wet meadow areas can be observed from the edge of the path.
These different landscapes make planning your days versatile. You can choose a route focusing on the shallow lakes and their siltation zones, or concentrate on wet meadows, lake edges and the birdlife found there. For families, it is interesting to experience nature not only as a backdrop, but also to discover specific features and characteristics of the landscape together.
Round Trips and Special Animals
Anyone who wants to get to know Illmitz and the national park on a round trip will find two clearly described options. The Zicklacken round trip leads to the Lower Stinkersee and the enclosure of the Przewalski horses. The Sandeck round trip starts at the Gerhard Gangl carriage yard on Ufergasse in Illmitz and then continues into the national park.
White Donkeys also perform important nature conservation work in Sandeck. Through trampling and grazing, they keep the vegetation short. The Sandeck area also offers a view into the inaccessible core zone of the national park. In this way, the round trip complements the paths through wet meadows and along the shallow lakes with another landscape experience.
This mix of different activities can play a role in choosing your accommodation: If you enjoy combining several experiences, plan the exhibition, a route and a round trip as different elements of your days. If you would like to experience individual landscape forms more intensely, each of the routes described offers its own particular focus.
Wine Tradition in November
Illmitz is also shaped by the traditional Martiniloben, which takes place on the first two weekends in November. During Martiniloben from 6 to 8 and from 13 to 15 November 2026, 32 Illmitz winemakers will hold open cellar days. For an autumn trip, this allows you to complement nature watching with an insight into the local wine tradition. The specific dates help you consciously plan your travel period according to your desired focus.
More Places for Planning Your Trip
You can also consider the following places separately: Apetlon, Weiden Am See, Edelstal, Podersdorf Am See, Halbturn, Gols, Bruckneudorf and Zurndorf. This allows you to compare Illmitz with other destinations and then decide which place best suits your interests in nature, culture and landscapes.
