Discover Peshkopi: Thermal Springs, Culture and Holiday Apartments

Nature

East of Peshkopi, the thermal springs are located in the Shërimi Valley, about 1.5 kilometres from the city. The thermal water has a temperature of 35 to 43.5 °C and a flow rate of 14 litres per second. It emerges from gypsum formations of Korab and contains 600 mg/l H₂S as well as 3,800 to 4,500 mg/l of minerals.

Culture

The Ethnographic and Historical Museum of Peshkopi is located in the city centre, about 30 metres from the main boulevard. In its archaeological pavilion, it displays finds from various parts of Dibër dating from the Early Neolithic to the Middle Ages. The exhibits also include traditional costumes from Dibër, waistcoats decorated with gold thread and cradles.

The Old Mosque stands in the old quarter of Peshkopi, near the Llixha stream. It is more than 100 years old and belongs to the Kadiri type. On 14 April 1914, Haki Sharofi opened the first Albanian school in Peshkopi there. In 1990, the Old Mosque was once again used as a religious building. Along the Haki-Stërmilli promenade stands the Skanderbeg statue, dedicated to Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, the Albanian national hero who lived from 1405 to 1468.

On the southeastern outskirts of the city lies Gradishta e Begjunecit, a cultural monument and archaeological site between the village of Begjunec and the Banja stream. The site was inhabited during three periods: the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age, Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. From the elevated Gradishta e Begjunecit, the entire Peshkopi basin could be surveyed. Rabdisht, about 6 kilometres from Peshkopi, has preserved traditional elements and was part of the Albanian “100 Villages” project.

A city tour of Peshkopi gives visitors an insight into the city’s history, culture and heritage. It passes through the old quarter, the surrounding area, the museum, the promenade and the urban area. The tour through the old quarter proceeds on foot along cobblestone streets and past houses historically associated with merchants and artisans from Dibra e Madhe.

Access to Rrafshi i Korabit from Peshkopi initially leads along country roads and then via footpaths towards the summit of Korab.

Events

The Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Peshkopi lists the national festival “Oda Dibrane” among its artistic and cultural activities. At the festival’s 30th anniversary, folk groups from Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro and the Presheva Valley were to perform Albanian songs, dances and traditions.
