Culture and History

The Historical Museum of Mati is located in the centre of Burrel. It serves as an important research and tourism centre and presents the history, traditions, ethnography and notable personalities of Mati. Its exhibits include archaeological objects, historical documents, traditional clothing and artefacts from early communities, as well as from more recent periods in the history of Mati.

The history of Burrel Prison is also part of the city’s historical heritage. Planning for its construction began in 1937. During the communist dictatorship, the prison was also known as an “industry of terror” or an extermination camp.

Rukaj Cave was one of the most popular caves in Mat Municipality. It is of geological and historical significance and preserves rare mineral formations as well as evidence of early human use.

Nature

Parku Nëna Mbretëresha Geraldinë was created during the reign of King Zog and covers 2.4 hectares. The park contains rare perennial trees introduced from Europe, Asia, Africa, America and other regions. Following its renovation a few years ago, it has served as a place of relaxation and leisure for citizens of different age groups and attracts numerous local and foreign visitors in every season.

In the wider regional area around Burrel, the “Ulëz–Shkopet” Nature Park encompasses the artificial lakes of Ulëz and Shkopet, river gorges and the surrounding forests. It offers opportunities for ecotourism, camping, nature walks and observing flora and fauna.

Also in the wider regional area around Burrel, kayaking, sport fishing, camping and boating take place on Lake Ulza. Small side lagoons and narrow gorges at Lake Ulza provide habitats for birds and aquatic species. Fishing and kayaking are practised at Lake Shkopet in the wider regional area around Burrel; gorges are also explored there.

The Mati Gorge is a natural monument in the wider regional area around Burrel. It was formed by the long-term erosion of the Mat River and is characterised by vertical rock walls and clear river waters. At the same time, the Mati Gorge is considered a destination for climbing, nature photography and exploring the mountains.

Traditions and Cuisine

Traditional dances of the Matjane in the Mati region include the Mati Dance, the Sword Dance and men’s dances. Festivities also feature the traditional ritual “Throwing the Slippers”.

The annual fair of traditional Mat products takes place in Burrel. It showcases handicrafts and food products from the region. The traditional cuisine of the Mati region is also based on local products and recipes passed down through generations. It includes flija, jufka, meat dishes and artisan dairy products.

An official one-day Mat itinerary begins in Burrel. In addition to the cultural and scenic destinations, this establishes an explicitly defined one-day regional route connected with the city.
