Kukës lies on the shore of Lake Fierza, at the foot of Mount Gjallica. Lake Fierza is considered Kukës’s main tourist attraction and offers impressive views. At the same time, water, parkland and a distinctive urban form shape the landscape: Lake Fierza and a park forest surround Kukës on three sides, while the town has an elongated shape resembling a peninsula.

Town by the Water

The centre of Kukës lies on the eastern side of the lakeshore. Kukës has a lakeside promenade. The rectangular street network was planned for Kukës; it was intended to divide the town into residential blocks. The existing road network connects the town with Tirana, Dibër, Tropojë, Mirditë, Shkodër and Kosovo.

New Kukës was built by the inhabitants of Kukës in less than ten years. The foundation stones were laid on 22 July 1962.

History and Cultural Heritage

The Ethnographic Museum of Kukës is located in the town centre. It is divided into three pavilions: biodiversity, archaeology and ethnography. The museum is accessible to visitors on foot and by vehicle. Kukës’s ethnographic heritage includes traditional clothing, songs, dances and musical instruments.

Beneath the town lies an underground tunnel complex approximately 30 metres deep. It was built between 1979 and 1992 and is considered a testament to Albania’s Cold War era. Another memorial site is the Kosovo Exodus Memorial. It was built in 2009 by former Kosovar refugees to mark the tenth anniversary of their return from exile. The memorial includes a kind of replica of a fortified tower, a kulla, intended to symbolise both Albanian hospitality and determination.

Nature and Trails

The Great Bridge of Kukës offers views of the Black Drin and Lake Fierza and is suitable for photography. The Shkalla e Keqe gorge is also visible to the naked eye from the town centre. It is a natural monument with a depth of approximately 1,000 metres and a narrowest point measuring 3 metres.

The Beleve waterfall is located in the area around Kukës, approximately 14 kilometres from the town. A path approximately 180 metres long leads from the main road to the waterfall. In the wider surrounding region, the alpine Path of Colors runs for approximately 18 kilometres between Shishtavec and the Korab Plateau; the hike usually takes 6 to 7 hours. A hiking route has also been opened in the wider area around Kukës, connecting Bele Waterfall, Zbinec and the Zbinec Pass.

Culinary Traditions

The traditional cuisine of the Kukës region includes regional flatbreads such as flija, as well as raki, honey and homemade dairy products. Traditional dishes from Kukës also include fish from Lake Fierza. Regional products and dishes thus complement the town’s natural and cultural points of interest.
