Öra showcases Hammarland’s distinctive coastline: the natural beach is characterized by red granite rocks where you can sunbathe, and offers views of Marsunds bron. There are also hiking trails and historic sites that highlight a range of different themes. When choosing a holiday apartment, it may therefore be important to consider whether you want to focus your trip primarily on coastal scenery, outdoor activities or cultural history.

Coast, Hiking Trail and Views

At Öra beach, rocks, sunshine and views of Marsunds bron come together to create a distinctive landscape. If you are more interested in active exploration, the Sadelinleden offers a different focus. This approximately 77-kilometre hiking trail runs through the municipalities of Hammarland and Finström. It can be hiked in shorter stages and in either direction; it is also planned to be developed gradually. Check local information on current trail conditions before planning your hike.

The Sadelinleden passes several villages and attractions. There is an observation tower on Klintbergen along the trail. From Klintbergen, you can look out over the Ålands hav, the northwestern archipelago and the interior of Åland. When choosing a route, you can therefore consider both the length of the hike and the viewpoints and places along the way. The option of shorter stages allows for a different schedule than a longer hike; choose specific stages based on current local information.

Traces of History and Culture

Hammarland’s historical themes range from medieval architecture to military fortifications. S:ta Catharina kyrka is a stone church dating from the late 13th century. Sålis Batteriberg was fortified by Russia during the First World War. The history of reading also has early roots here: thanks to P.U.F. Sadelin, the first library in Åland was established in Hammarland.

Another cultural connection can be found in the picturesque surroundings of Skarpnåtö Hembygdsgård. Parts of the films “Stormskärs Maja” and “Iris” were filmed there. The Hembygdsgård also has literature about Skarpnåtö; hides and handicrafts are also available there. Film history, local literature and the objects on display offer different cultural points of interest.

Sälskär, in the vicinity of Hammarland, is a historic site associated with seal hunting: it was once an important base for this activity. Sälskärs fyr was built in 1868 and was manned until it was automated in 1948. This history adds a maritime perspective to Hammarland’s local and architectural history.

Seasonal Travel

For cycling plans, the privately operated bicycle ferry M/S Silvana is worth considering: during the peak summer season, it runs between Skarpnåtö in Hammarland and Lolo’s Seaside Café in Snäckö, Geta. It is a seasonal service, not a year-round connection. Check the current operating period and timetable before planning. This makes it possible to distinguish this option from the landscape and historical attractions described as available year-round.

Which Focus Suits Your Trip?

If you want your stay to focus primarily on coastal scenery, Öra is a specific place to consider. The Sadelinleden, by contrast, offers a hiking focus, with different ways to plan your trip thanks to its approximate length, shorter stages and the option of hiking in either direction. For cultural and historical interests, there are the church, Sålis Batteriberg, and the stories surrounding Skarpnåtö and Sälskär. These distinctions can help you decide whether Hammarland is the right holiday destination and choose a holiday apartment to match the kind of trip you want.
