Eckerö combines geological history, coastline and cultural history. This mix is a useful starting point when choosing a holiday apartment: consider whether you want to focus your stay mainly on swimming, geology or postal history.

Geology on the way to the sea

The 350-metre-long Geostigen “Through Fire and Ice” starts just outside the Åland Hunting and Fishing Museum and leads past boathouses to the cliffs by the sea. Along the way, it showcases rocks from different geological eras and presents Åland’s geological history over a period of two billion years. The short route thus links a specific trail with the vast timescale of geological history.

Swimming and golf

Degersand Beach has a gently sloping stretch of the Åland Sea that invites adults and children to swim. This gives a coastal stay a clear focus on the water. The gently sloping beach forms a clear contrast with the cliffs at the end of Geostigen.

Eckerö Golf offers a different activity, with four different tee options. These include options that make the game suitable for beginners, young people and players with shorter hitting distances. Holiday plans can therefore bring different interests together: a day at the beach, a geological walk or golf.

Postal history and cultural heritage

The Eckerö Post & Customs House served as a Russian border station facing Sweden for more than a hundred years. It is also an important part of Åland’s cultural heritage and closely connected to the old postal route.

More experiences in the Åland countryside destination

The Åland countryside also offers other cultural and historical attractions. At the Bomarsund visitor centre, the area’s history is presented through sound and images. Kastelholm Castle was built as a defensive fortress in the late 14th century. Jan Karlsgården, an open-air museum, is also located in the Kastelholm area. Jomala Church is one of Finland’s oldest stone churches.

Historical experiences in the Åland countryside also include Prästö’s cemeteries belonging to Greek Orthodox, Muslim, Lutheran, Catholic and Jewish communities. They are connected with the period when Bomarsund Fortress was built. The Prästö hiking trail passes the Russian telegraph station and its accommodation building, Doniken; both are among the few surviving Russian buildings in Åland.

The Åland countryside is also shaped by its scenery and local produce: a lookout tower stands on Getabergen in Geta, offering far-reaching views in clear weather. The region has several authentic small-scale producers. Visitors can stroll among the extensive apple orchards to buy the famous apple juice, or visit a caramel workshop and sample handmade sweets. Offers from individual producers may vary.
