Architecture and cultural history
The Sudanese-style mosques that survive in the north of Côte d’Ivoire were built mostly between the 17th and 19th centuries. They combine a style developed in Djenné around the 14th century with local architectural forms and techniques from the Gur and Mandé cultural areas. Common features include low, tapering rectangular or square forms, massive pillars made of wood or earth blocks, and tall truncated-pyramid or pointed-arch minarets and conical qibla towers. As a group, the mosques represent a significant exchange of influences in the Gur and Mandé cultural areas between the 14th and 18th centuries. Thus, alongside coastal and natural themes, the wider destination also offers a multifaceted architectural history.
