Those who want to discover Tân An City through its culture will find places with very different stories in the associated commune: a former political headquarters, a museum and cultural park, as well as temples and communal houses that bring together religious, community and historical significance. This diversity makes the area particularly appealing to travellers who want to focus their explorations on architecture and local history.

Architecture and history in one place

Nhà Tổng Thận was built around 1892–1893 in the style of a French villa. Following its restoration in 2013, the historic building still retains the venerable character of French architecture, while its furnishings follow a Vietnamese style. Models recreate important meetings of the Tân An Provincial Party Committee, while photographs and objects illustrate the way of life and daily routines of Tân An’s former residents. Architecture, political history and everyday life thus come together in one house.

The house’s former role is also part of its history: after the victory of the August Revolution, the provisional government took over Nhà Tổng Thận and used it as a public building. It was selected as the first public headquarters of the Tân An Provincial Party Committee. Today, the house is used to pass on revolutionary traditions to younger generations in Long An Province and southern Vietnam. These different periods give the building a significance that goes beyond its architectural form.

The Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức memorial complex is regarded by visitors from Vietnam and abroad as a place to visit and study historic architecture. The complex includes a gate, a tomb, a temple dedicated to Kiến Xương Quận công Nguyễn Huỳnh Đức, and a building for displaying documents. Each element gives the complex its own historical and architectural character.

Temples, communal houses and festivals

Quan Thánh Đế Temple, also known as miếu Trung Nghĩa, was built in the 19th century by the Hoa community with support from Vietnamese residents. Its architecture features distinctive Chinese characteristics. The collection includes two groups of Quan Công figures, a figure of the Holy Mother, a figure of Bổn Đầu Công, as well as paintings on glass, fabric and paper, and other objects of artistic and cultural-historical value. Together with the neighbouring Thiên Hậu and Quan Phủ temples, it forms a group of three old temples, with Quan Thánh Đế in the middle. A small three-gate entrance opens onto the Bảo Định River and leads to the three temples.

Large ceremonies in honour of Quan Công are held at Quan Thánh Đế Temple each year. Charity and social welfare activities are also organised there. Đình Khánh Hậu likewise combines religious and community significance: the village communal house is dedicated to Thành Hoàng bổn cảnh, the local guardian deity, and was built around the beginning of the 19th century. It is also a historical record of land reclamation and settlement development in Khánh Hậu.

The history of Đình Khánh Hậu also reaches back to 1945: the communal house was where the Thanh niên Tiền phong was founded and trained before setting out to stage an uprising in Tân An Province. Four important festivals are held there every year. Chạp Miễu Ức falls on the 15th and 16th days of the 12th lunar month, Cầu An on the 15th, 16th and 17th days of the 4th lunar month, Hạ Điền on the 16th day of the 6th lunar month, and Thượng Điền on the 16th day of the 10th lunar month. Local authorities and many residents take part in the festivals. If you would like to plan your trip around one of them, check the date against the lunar calendar for the relevant year in advance.

More insights into the culture of Long An

For another glimpse of traditional architecture, visit Đình Bình Lập, an old communal worship building in Tân An that was built around the first half of the 19th century. It preserves cultural features of a southern Vietnamese village communal house, as well as historical and cultural documents and objects from the 19th century. Its layout comprises three building sections in the traditional order: võ ca, chánh điện and hậu đình. It also features a Tứ-Trụ structure. The building can therefore be understood both through its architectural form and through the historical evidence it preserves.

The Long An Museum is located in Tân An City and displays numerous objects relating to the province’s history, culture and nature. Công viên Tượng đài Long An, which covers more than 6 hectares, offers a different way to learn about history. The cultural park is a place for sightseeing and recreation, and presents the history of the resistance of Long An’s land and people. Its exhibition covers eight themes about notable achievements and defining events in the resistance against the United States. Work on the park began in 2005, and it was inaugurated on 28 April 2010.

A connection with nature adds another dimension to this cultural picture: the Khánh Hậu Trôm at the entrance to Diêu Quang Pagoda has been recognised as a national heritage tree by the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Tân An City, the different themes can help you plan your trip around architecture and community history, temple traditions, festivals, or the province’s history at the museum and cultural park. You can tailor your stay to the subjects that interest you most.
