Phu Quoc: Coast, Island Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc combines an extensive coastline with forest landscapes, cultural sites and island traditions. Depending on whether you want to focus on the beach, nature, local cuisine or temple visits, you’ll find different ideas for your trip—and for choosing the right place to stay.
Coast and Island Nature
The coast of Phú Quốc is 150 km long and is known for its gentle waves and clear, emerald-green water. The island is considered Vietnam’s best-known destination for water sports. In the wider island area, Bãi Trường offers a different coastal feel: the beach stretches for 20 km and affords views of the sunset. Bãi Kem, in turn, is known for its fine white sand, clear water and peaceful atmosphere; visitors can swim there.
The interior of the island has its own appeal, too. Phú Quốc National Park covers more than 31,422 hectares of primary forest and is home to 1,164 plant species and 381 animal species. Trekking routes of 2 to 8 km through tropical forest ecosystems are available; trail conditions may vary. This means beach days and hikes can be treated as separate focuses of your island trip, without having to squeeze both into the same day’s schedule.
Cultural Sites and Traditions
In Dương Đông, in the immediate area of the destination, Dinh Cậu stands on a natural rocky outcrop that extends into the sea. Rugged rocks and shady trees characterize the surroundings. The spiritual structure has historical and cultural significance; its construction is traditionally dated to around the 17th century, when the first inhabitants settled on the island. The Dinh Cậu Festival is held there every year on the 15th day of the tenth lunar month. Since the date follows the lunar calendar, it’s a good idea to check the date before planning your trip.
A further festival is held each year at Dinh Bà in the surrounding area, on the 18th day of the first lunar month. It includes incense offerings and prayers for favorable weather, good harvests and peace, as well as a procession, lion dances and other traditional folk activities. The exact program may vary from year to year. Those interested in religious culture can also light incense, pray and learn about Buddhist culture at Sùng Hưng Pagoda in nearby Dương Đông. In Dương Tơ Commune, Hộ-Quốc Pagoda offers a place for prayer and quiet; visitors can take in the surrounding mountains and sea from there.
Markets, Cuisine and Island Experiences
Phú Quốc Night Market is in the center of Dương Đông and is a popular evening destination for local specialties, especially seafood. The market offers dishes including Bún Quậy and Bún Kèn, as well as fresh and dried seafood. Visitors can buy seafood and have it prepared, or take it home as a gift; the offerings at individual stalls and the available dishes may vary. At the traditional fishing village of Hàm Ninh, visitors can get a glimpse of local daily life and enjoy fresh seafood at a floating restaurant.
Visitors can also learn about the production of Phú-Quốc fish sauce on the island: traditional producers explain how anchovies are fermented and how the sauce is made; products can be bought as souvenirs. Boats are the main way to take trips to the smaller islands around Phú Quốc. Options include a private boat or tickets and package tours through travel companies. Motorcycle tours follow small roads to local fishing villages and less-visited natural spots. On the small islands of the An-Thới Archipelago, visitors can also go on diving tours and observe coral reefs and diverse marine life.
Choosing the Right Focus
When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider which experiences you want to shape your stay: the beach and water sports, trekking in the national park, or cultural and market visits in Dương Đông. Hộ-Quốc Pagoda gives Dương Tơ another cultural point of interest, while trips to fishing villages and smaller islands offer a different focus. If you first sort out your interests, it will be easier to choose a place to stay that fits your plans in Phu Quoc.
