La Gi: Coast, Dunes and Festival Culture
Accommodation in La Gi
La Gi has many different facets: sweeping sand dunes, coastal landscapes, a long history of fishing and recurring ceremonies. When choosing a holiday rental, you can first consider whether you would rather focus your stay on landscapes and water, morning observations or cultural sites.
Coast, Dunes and Hòn Bà
La Gi town has a 28-kilometre coastline. It includes the important estuaries of the Dinh and the Phan; La Gi is also known for its vast, sweeping sand dunes. Đồi Dương Beach is in the central area of the town. Hòn Bà lies in the wider area around La Gi, about two kilometres offshore. The small, turtle-shaped island has a rocky shoreline, ancient trees and a temple dedicated to the goddess Thiên Y A Na. It covers around 2.8 hectares, rises 38 metres and has a circumference of 800 metres at its base.
In Cam Bình, which belongs to Tân Phước commune, visitors can swim and watch hundreds of basket boats bringing freshly caught seafood ashore in the morning. At La Gi fishing port, you can also watch boats returning early in the morning after a night at sea. While swimming and basket boats shape the experience in Cam Bình, the focus at the port is on the boats’ return. Activities may vary from day to day.
Festival Culture in Tân Tiến and Vạn Tân Long
Dinh Thầy Thím is located in Tân Tiến, in La Gi town. The historic complex comprises the worship area and the tomb of Thầy Thím. It was recognised as an architectural and artistic monument in 1997; in 2022, its festival was recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage of Vietnam. After nearly 150 years, Dinh Thầy Thím has largely retained its original architectural form, construction and materials, as well as its solemn, timeworn character.
Two major ceremonies are held there each year: the Tảo-mộ ceremony on the fifth day of the first lunar month and the autumn worship ceremony from the 14th to the 16th day of the ninth lunar month. During the festival, traditional games and sporting events take place in the Ngảnh Tam Tân landscape and tourism area, including basket boat races and beach volleyball. The specific festival programme may change. During the festival, the Tam Tân seafood market presents local specialities to pilgrims and tourists.
Vạn Tân Long also has recurring ceremonies: two Cầu-Ngư ceremonies are held there each year, on the 16th day of the third and eighth lunar months. These traditions follow the lunar calendar, providing different dates from the two ceremonies at Dinh Thầy Thím.
Choose Experiences to Suit Your Interests
If a particular festival is central to your trip, plan around the lunar calendar dates and check the dates for your travel year. For swimming in Cam Bình or watching the fishing port in the morning, the specific locations are the main points of reference. Before searching for a holiday rental, consider which of these experiences will determine your choice, then check the property’s location against your own plans.
