Qurayya: Cairn Field and Fort
Accommodation in Qurayya
Qurayya draws attention to archaeological evidence: a Wadi Suq culture cairn field from the Late Bronze Age and a fortified fort near al-Qurayya give the place two distinct historical themes. This provides a clear starting point for choosing a holiday apartment destination: the key question is whether you are primarily interested in early funerary architecture or would also like to include other nature and cultural experiences in the wider destination of Fujairah.
The Wadi Suq culture cairn field
Qurayya is home to a formerly extensive Wadi Suq culture cairn field, dating to approximately 1900 to 1300 BC. The cairns served as tombs and usually contained only one individual. They are elongated oval stone structures made from wadi pebbles, with a construction reminiscent of beehives. The historical significance is therefore defined by both its date and its construction: the dating places the field in the Late Bronze Age, while the pebble material, oval outline and beehive-like construction characterise the cairns.
As the settlement grew, the cairn field was greatly reduced in size and partly destroyed. Individual cairn groups were preserved and protected by the antiquities authority. The historical picture therefore encompasses both the field’s former extent and the limited preservation of these groups. Both aspects belong together when you place Qurayya’s Bronze Age heritage in context: the burial structures represent the Wadi Suq culture, while their alteration and the protection of individual groups form further aspects of their history.
A second historical point of interest is the fortified fort near al-Qurayya, colloquially known as “Fort of Mohammed bin Mohammed”. A 2000 bulletin compares it with the contemporary fort at Safad further up the wadi: the fort near al-Qurayya was considerably larger, but more simply built. Size and construction are two distinct points of comparison. For visitors to Qurayya, the fort complements the cairns with a different type of structure: rather than funerary architecture, the focus here is a fortified building compared with Safad.
More themes in the wider destination of Fujairah
The wider destination of Fujairah offers other themes as well. Wadi Wurayah is located in the Al Hajar Mountains and was declared the United Arab Emirates’ first Mountain Protected Area in 2009 by Decree No. 2. It is also an important area for the conservation of the environment and culture. The Fujairah Museum conveys the history and cultural heritage of earlier generations through archaeological finds. The forts each have a different focus: Al Hayl Fort overlooks several routes leading to the city, while Fujairah Fort was used for defensive purposes. In Dibba, visitors can take day trips and overnight excursions on a traditional Arabian dhow; check current availability before making specific plans. Thus, the wider Fujairah destination brings together nature and protected-area themes, a museum, forts and a dhow trip as distinct areas of interest.
Choose the right focus for your holiday apartment search
Focus your search on Qurayya if the cairn field and the fort are your main interests. If you would also like to consider mountains, a museum, forts or a dhow trip, compare these interests across the wider destination of Fujairah. Thinking about your preferred focus can help you align your choice of destination and your holiday apartment search with what you want to discover on your trip.
