Fujairah: Fort, History and Nature
Accommodation in Fujairah
Fujairah’s history can be explored through the places where it comes to life. Fujairah Fort stands above the city in the old town area; at Heritage Village, models of traditional houses and historical everyday objects tell the story of life in earlier generations. If you want to focus your trip on culture, these offer two different points of interest: a fort in a striking location and an exhibition devoted to everyday life.
Fujairah Fort above the city
Fujairah Fort stands on a high hill in the old town area, overlooking the city of Fujairah. It is situated on a gentle rise at the edge of date palm groves. It is said to be 360 years old. The fort is also one of the most significant and largest fortresses in the Emirate of Fujairah. The site was used for defensive purposes—an additional aspect to consider if you are interested in the fort’s history. Its location, reported age and historical function each offer a different perspective on the site, without all addressing the same question of its significance.
Everyday history at Heritage Village
Heritage Village was founded in 1996 and is located in the Madabb district of Fujairah. On display are models of traditional houses, as well as handheld objects, tools and household appliances from earlier times in the lives of Fujairah’s people. The focus here is therefore not the military function of a fort, but rather the presentation of types of homes and objects from everyday life. This different perspective makes the village a fitting addition for anyone interested not only in historic buildings but also in the cultural heritage and daily life of past generations.
Nature and culture in the wider destination of Fujairah
Beyond the city, the wider destination of Fujairah also offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip. Wadi Wurayah lies in the Al Hajar Mountains and is considered an important area for the conservation of the environment and culture. Visitors are asked to leave the wadi as they found it. If you include nature experiences in your plans, you can keep this simple principle of respect in mind during your visit. In 2009, Wadi Wurayah was declared the United Arab Emirates’ first “Mountain Protected Area” by Decree No. 2.
In the Emirate of Fujairah, Fujairah Museum uses archaeological finds to convey the history and cultural heritage of earlier generations. Sheikh Zayed Mosque is modelled on its namesake in Abu Dhabi. Al Hayl Fort also offers a historical perspective: from there, the fortress overlooks several routes leading to the city. Across the wider destination of Fujairah, these places broaden the perspective on different cultural themes.
Weighing up excursions and interests
Regional experiences include day trips and overnight excursions from Dibba aboard a traditional Arab dhow. The two options differ mainly in whether you want to plan a daytime trip or an overnight stay. Together with the fort, Heritage Village and the nature and culture attractions across the wider destination of Fujairah, they offer a choice of interests: city history, everyday culture, mountain scenery or a longer trip on the water.
When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first decide which of these themes matter most to your trip. If Fujairah’s history and Heritage Village are the main draw, base your choice on these city attractions. If you also want to include Wadi Wurayah, other cultural sites in the emirate or dhow trips from Dibba, take these regional interests into account when planning.
