Tatköy: Mosque, Woodwork and Archaeological Traces
Accommodation in Tatköy
Tatköy brings together different cultural points of interest: Tatköy Merkez Camii combines a historic construction date with distinctive wooden details, while Pınar Höyüğü and Tatköy Yassıören Mevkii Örenyeri are registered or classified as first-degree archaeological sites. The cemetery is also registered as a cultural asset. Alongside its archaeological sites, the mosque’s distinctive architectural features give the place its own character.
Architecture of Tatköy Merkez Camii
According to the inscription on its west façade, Tatköy Merkez Camii was built in 1867–1868. It stands on sloping ground and is built of rubble stone. From the north, it appears to have one storey; from the south, two. Its appearance therefore differs depending on the direction from which it is viewed—a clear example of how the building’s form interacts with the slope.
The floor plan is rectangular and almost square. The mosque measures 16.99 × 15.25 metres externally and 14.46 × 13.37 metres internally. These two sets of measurements make the building’s proportions tangible: despite its rectangular shape, its length and width are close in each case.
The wooden elements deserve special attention. The mihrab, or prayer niche, has three borders that step inward and feature different plant motifs. In the southwest corner is a minber, or pulpit, also made of wood. Its door, frame, screens, canopy area and small dome above feature elaborate woodwork. The mihrab and minber are thus two distinct elements of the mosque: the prayer niche stands out for its tiered borders, while the woodwork on the minber extends across several parts.
Archaeological and cultural points of interest
Pınar Höyüğü is registered as a first-degree archaeological site; the decision by the heritage conservation board dates to 2015. Tatköy Yassıören Mevkii Örenyeri is also classified as a first-degree archaeological site. The two place names refer to separate archaeological sites. Tatköy’s cemetery, in turn, is registered as a cultural asset, adding another type of cultural site to the archaeological listings.
A look at the surrounding area
Just outside Tatköy, the Church of Hagios Mikhael, also known as Büyük Kilise, is located in the Subaşı neighbourhood of Sille. It lies on the bank of an old stream, south of the turn-off to Tatköy. Its name, neighbourhood and location by the stream place the church in the surrounding area, not in Tatköy itself. This allows you to consider the regional context without attributing the building to Tatköy.
Choosing what to focus on in Tatköy
For your travel planning, it helps to weigh up the options: if you are primarily interested in architecture, the mosque’s date, hillside location, dimensions and wooden details take centre stage. Those interested in archaeology can visit the separately named sites of Pınar Höyüğü and Tatköy Yassıören Mevkii Örenyeri. Hagios Mikhael broadens the view to the surrounding area, but remains outside Tatköy. These different points of interest can help you decide whether Tatköy suits your travel plans and guide your search for a holiday apartment to match the theme of your stay.
